The invention discloses a black iron oxide pigment and a preparation method thereof. The method comprises the following steps: (1) a ferrous sulfate raw material and manganese salt are mixed, an alkaline solution is then added to adjust the pH to be 10-11, a heating reaction is performed until a material liquid is sufficiently reacted; (2) a silicate solution is added to the material liquid in the step (1), the temperature is kept at 70-90 DEG C, the pH value is 9-11, a reaction is performed for 30-60 min, the pH value is adjusted to be 6-8, and a thermal-insulation reaction is performed for 30-60 min; (3) a product after the reaction is rinsed, dried, ground and then calcined at a high temperature, and the black iron oxide pigment is obtained. The high-temperature-resistant black iron oxide prepared with the method has the advantages that resistance to temperature of 700 DEG C or higher can be realized, the maximum temperature can exceed 1200 DEG C, and the black iron oxide pigment also has characteristics of quite good acid resistance, alkali resistance, high light-absorbing property and the like, therefore, the application range of black iron oxide is greatly broadened.
