Smart recognition apparatus and method

A qualifying connection for an instrument attaches to a source of electrosurgery energy to and the instrument and has first and second parts coupled to the instrument and the source, respectively. Optical couplings on the connection transmit invisible energy to identify the instrument and are proximate on the first and second parts. A light modifier on the first part is proximal to the second part for modification of radiation in the infrared wavelengths so infrared transmitters encode signals and non contact coded proximity detectors on the second part are the coupled detectors. Non contact coded proximity detectors respond to modified infrared light establishing an Nth bit identification code. An infrared light supply in the source pass from the transmitters across the communicating couplings for encoding signals by modification of the infrared light with a light modifier. Mechanical attachments include conjugating male and female portions physically extending between the parts for mating engagement. The attachments juxtaposition the parts when the attachments geometrically conjugate to geographically positioning the couplings proximate for communicating. The attachments have one or more conductors for delivery of high frequency energy from the source to the instrument. A cable fits between the first part of the connection and the instrument and has electrical conductors for carrying energy passing through the first part of the connection from the source to the instrument. An identifying circuit couples to the second part and responds to invisible light optically communicated across the couplings for verifying the type of instrument connected by the cable to the source.

External forceps channel device for endoscope

The present invention was made in the light of the foregoing backgrounds, and an object thereof is to provide a forceps channel add-on device for an endoscope, provided on an outer periphery of an insertion portion of the endoscope. The forceps channel add-on device for an endoscope is an external forceps channel device for an endoscope, which is capable of providing two forceps channels or more without controlling the luminous intensity and the field of view of the endoscope, capable of extracting a substance larger than the bore diameter of the forceps channel multiple times while using the endoscope in a state of not being drawn out, without imposing a heavy burden on a patient, and also capable of performing examination after an operation as to whether complications are incurred after the evulsion, whether there is any other affected part overlooked, and so forth. An external forceps channel device for an endoscope, provided with an external forceps channel which is capable of being repeatedly inserted and extracted in a way of being guided by a guide provided on an endoscope separately and independently therefrom along an outside of an insertion portion of the endoscope while using the endoscope without drawing it out, the endoscope incorporating an air supply path, a light source, a CCD camera, and a forceps channel and including the insertion portion and an maneuvering portion, characterized in that provided is the external forceps channel capable of repeatedly extracting a foreign substance larger than a bore diameter of the incorporated forceps channel in a way of being guided by the guide along the outside of the endoscope, together with the whole external forceps channel itself in a state where the foreign substance is grasped by forceps inserted through the external forceps channel, and that provided is the external forceps channel capable of being repeatedly inserted in a way of being guided by the guide along the outside of the endoscope in a state where the endoscope is not drawn out.

Ultraviolet laser apparatus and exposure apparatus using same

An ultraviolet laser apparatus having a single-wavelength oscillating laser generating laser light between an infrared band and a visible band, an optical amplifier for amplifying the laser light, and a wavelength converting portion converting the amplified laser light into ultraviolet light using a non-linear optical crystal. An exposure apparatus transfers a pattern image of a mask onto a substrate and includes a light source having a laser apparatus emitting laser light having a single wavelength, a first fiber optical amplifier for amplifying the laser light, a light dividing device for dividing or branching the amplified laser light into plural lights, and second fiber optical amplifiers for amplifying the plural divided or branched lights, respectively, and a transmission optical system for transmitting the laser light emitted from the light source to the exposure apparatus.

Coated Surgical Staples and an Illuminated Staple Cartridge for a Surgical Stapling Instrument

A coated surgical fastener is provided for an easy visualization within tissue. The coated surgical fastener includes a core and a relatively non-reflective coating applied about the core. There is also disclosed an illuminated staple cartridge for use with a surgical stapling device having a light source. The illuminated staple cartridge includes a transparent insert and a relatively nontransparent U-shaped outer channel at least partially surrounding the transparent insert. Windows formed in sides of the U-shaped outer channel allow defined amounts of light to project from the sides of the illuminated staple cartridge.
