Ultra wide bandwidth spread-spectrum communications system

An ultra wide bandwidth, high speed, spread spectrum communications system uses short wavelets of electromagnetic energy to transmit information through objects such as walls or earth. The communication system uses baseband codes formed from time shifted and inverted wavelets to encode data on a RF signal. Typical wavelet pulse durations are on the order of 100 to 1000 picoseconds with a bandwidth of approximately 8 GHz to 1 GHz, respectively. The combination of short duration wavelets and encoding techniques are used to spread the signal energy over an ultra wide frequency band such that the energy is not concentrated in any particular narrow band (e.g. VHF: 30-300 MHz or UHF: 300-1000 MHz) and is not detected by conventional narrow band receivers so it does not interfere with those communication systems. The use of pulse codes composed of time shifted and inverted wavelets gives the system according to the present invention has a spatial resolution on the order of 1 foot which is sufficient to minimize the negative effects of multipath interference and permit time domain rake processing.

In an optical transmitter comprising a directly modulated laser and a wavelength filter provided on a post-stage of the directly modulated laser, the wavelength filter has a modulated light input port for inputting modulated light output from the directly modulated laser, a filter transmitted light output port for outputting light having a wavelength included in a filter transmission band among the modulated light as filter transmitted light, and a filter cutoff light output port provided separately from the modulated light input port and the filter transmitted light output port and outputting light having a wavelength included in a filter cutoff band among the modulated light as filter cutoff light, and the peak of the filter transmission band is set on a shorter-wave side from the peak of the spectrum of modulated light output from the directly modulated laser.

Ice and water detection system

A system for detecting ice or water within an area of interest having a detection system measuring radiance or reflectance of the area of interest when exposed to shortwave infrared radiation having a wavelength in the range containing a crossover point between the curves representing the absorption of electromagnetic radiation by ice and water. The detection system measures the radiance or reflectance in a first band having a wavelength in a spectral band on a first side of the crossover point and outputting a first band signal, and further measures the radiance or reflectance in a second band having a wavelength in a spectral band on a second opposing side of the same crossover point and outputting a second band signal. A processing unit determines a ratio of the first band signal and the second band signal and compares the ratio to a predetermined critical ratio and outputs a determination signal indicating presence of ice or water.
