Management of a thermostat's power consumption

An HVAC system comprises a programmable wireless thermostat and a remote receiver unit. The thermostat includes a user interface having one or more displays, user input devices, such as buttons, sliders, or a touch screen, and a backlight. The thermostat may include a proximity sensor, wherein the user interface is controlled based on a user's presence near the thermostat. A thermostat controller enters into a reduced energy consumption mode and switches the user interface to an idle state when the proximity sensor indicates a lack of user proximity for a predetermined duration. When the proximity sensor indicates user proximity, the controller exits the reduced energy consumption mode and switches the user interface to an active state. During the reduced energy consumption mode, the user interface may be concealed when the user interface is in a housing which is transparent when backlit but is opaque otherwise.

Method and apparatus for load sharing in wireless access networks based on dynamic transmission power adjustment of access points

A load balancing system and methodology for packet-based wireless cellular networks, whereby wireless access points are dynamically reconfigured by altering their transmission power level to modify their area of coverage. The modification function is based on the localized traffic load or congestion at each individual access point, or the collective load experienced by groups of access points. This modification to the cellular layout is used as an implicit load-balancing technique. When an overloaded access point reduces its coverage area, it forces some wireless client devices that were earlier within its footprint, but no longer within its coverage area, to attach to alternative access points. Similarly, when an underloaded access point increases its coverage area, it provides an opportunity to wireless devices, which were earlier outside its footprint, but now within the expanded coverage area, to switch attachment to this access point. By changing the access point to which a wireless device attaches, the load-levels on the individual access points are indirectly changed.

Agile frequency converter for multichannel systems using IF-RF level exhange and tunable filters

Agile frequency converter and method, IF-RF level exchange process, and notch filtering techniques. System noise and spurious levels generated by channel frequency conversion is reduced in applications requiring broadband combining of frequency converters to form multichannel composite signal. Converter employs two-stage frequency conversion process, with gain exchange system using variable pre-mixer gain and variable post-mixer attenuation to maintain constant RF output signal power level. For those few conversion frequencies where distortion component(s) cannot be filtered without degrading desired signal, IF-RF level exchange is optimized for meeting the carrier-to-distortion (C / D) ratio specifications at slight expense of noise level for that channel only, while still meeting aggregate combined carrier-to-noise (C / N) specification requirements. Optimal apportionment of level exchange for each channel depends on specific frequency rejection capability of spurious components and is matched to filtering capability and stored within non-volatile memory of a microcontroller used in the frequency converter.

Method and apparatus for training using variable transmit signal power levels

A method and apparatus for a multiple channel communication device training, and processing utilizing a transmit signal power control operation. Multiple channel communication devices utilize inter-channel crosstalk mitigation techniques, such as MIMO processing modules or MIMO precoding systems, to cancel unwanted crosstalk coupling across active and provisioned channels. Upon provisioning and activation of a new channel that connects to the multiple channel communication device the signal on the new channel couples into other channels and the existing MIMO filtering or processing structure is untrained to mitigate the crosstalk from the new channel. A power control training operation prevents crosstalk from hindering operation on other channels during the training operation. During one example training operation, the power level of a transmit signal is incrementally increased as the crosstalk cancellation filter(s) are trained.

Method and apparatus for adapting antenna array using received perdetermined signal

An antenna apparatus that can increase capacity in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The antenna operates in conjunction with a station and comprises a plurality of antenna elements, each coupled to a respective weight control component to provide a weight to the signal transmitted from (or received by) each element. The weight for each antenna element is adjusted to achieve optimum reception during, for example, an idle mode when a pilot signal is received. The antenna array creates a beam former for signals to be transmitted from the mobile station, and a directional receiving array to more optimally detect and receive signals transmitted from the base station. By directionally receiving and transmitting signals, multipath fading and intercell interference are greatly reduced. The weights are adjusted in a coarse and a fine mode. In the coarse mode all the weight control components are jointly adjusted or changed so that the antenna beam scans through a predetermined sector of a circle until a signal quality metric of the received signal is optimized. The coarse adjustment mode is followed by a fine adjustment mode during which the weights of are independently adjusted to further optimize the signal quality metric.

CDMA power amplifier design for low and high power modes

An amplifier circuit responsive to a power mode signal improves efficiency at low power levels without compromising efficiency at high power levels. At low power levels, high impedance is presented with suitable adjustment in the phase of the signal. Also, providing for predistortion linearization improves high power efficiency and switching the predistortion linearizer OFF at low power levels contributes little more than a small insertion loss. The power amplifier also uses a bias circuit incorporating a dual harmonic resonance filter to provide high impedance at a fundamental frequency and low impedance at a second harmonic. These properties are of particularly advantageous since amplifiers in cell-phones are used in low power modes most of the time although they are designed to be most efficient at primarily the highest power levels.
