Magnetic nerve stimulator for exciting peripheral nerves

InactiveUS6086525AHigh efficiency and rateEfficient stimulationElectrotherapySurgeryDeep levelIncreased metabolic rate
A magnetic nerve stimulator system is comprised of a core constructed from a material having a high field saturation with a coil winding. A thyrister capacitive discharge circuit pulses the device. A rapidly changing magnetic field is guided by the core, preferably vanadium permendur. For task specific excitation of various nerve groups, specially constructed cores allow for excitation of nerves at deeper levels with higher efficiency than is possible with air-core stimulators. Among the applications possible with this invention are treatment of incontinence, rehabilitation of large muscle groups in the leg and arm, and excitation of abdominal wall muscle groups to aid in weight loss and metabolic rate increase. A C-shape is employed for focussing the stimulation as desired.

Method of forming thin film and method of modifying surface of thin film

A method including: a plasma contact step including supplying treatment gas including a reactant gas into a chamber, activating a reactant component included in the treatment gas by generating plasma from the reactant component by applying high-frequency power, and bringing the treatment gas including the reactant component activated into contact with the surface of the substrate, in which in the plasma contact step, a first plasma generation condition in which stable plasma is generated by applying high-frequency power of a first power level while supplying treatment gas of a first concentration is changed to a second plasma generation condition in which a desired thin film is obtained by performing at least one of increasing the high-frequency power to a second power level and gradually decreasing the treatment gas to a second concentration, and of gradually increasing the high-frequency power to the second power level, and abnormal electrical discharge is suppressed.

Method and apparatus for adapting antenna array using received perdetermined signal

An antenna apparatus that can increase capacity in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The antenna operates in conjunction with a station and comprises a plurality of antenna elements, each coupled to a respective weight control component to provide a weight to the signal transmitted from (or received by) each element. The weight for each antenna element is adjusted to achieve optimum reception during, for example, an idle mode when a pilot signal is received. The antenna array creates a beam former for signals to be transmitted from the mobile station, and a directional receiving array to more optimally detect and receive signals transmitted from the base station. By directionally receiving and transmitting signals, multipath fading and intercell interference are greatly reduced. The weights are adjusted in a coarse and a fine mode. In the coarse mode all the weight control components are jointly adjusted or changed so that the antenna beam scans through a predetermined sector of a circle until a signal quality metric of the received signal is optimized. The coarse adjustment mode is followed by a fine adjustment mode during which the weights of are independently adjusted to further optimize the signal quality metric.

Thin walled thermoelectric devices and methods for production thereof

A thermoelectric generator is built into the wall of a heat exchanger by applying coatings of dielectric, electrical conductor and N-type and P-type thermoelectric materials. A tubular heat exchanger lends itself to the application of coatings in annular rings, providing ease of manufacture and a structure that is robust to damage.

Dynamic adjustment of power plant output based on electrical grid characteristics

Method, power plant, and computer program product for use in controlling power output by a power plant. The power plant includes a wind farm with a plurality of wind turbines, a grid power converter (such as one or more HVDC links), a sensor to measure the frequency of a power grid, and a supervisory controller. The supervisory controller implements a control algorithm that adjusts the power output from the power plant in response to the frequency of the power grid dropping below a first target frequency by changing the pitch of the blades of at least one wind turbine, increasing the level of a portion of the power contributed by at least one wind turbine, or increasing the level of the power output by the grid power converter.
