Providing services to packet flows in a network

A system and method for providing services to packet flows in a communication network. The services include enhanced charging, stateful firewalls, traffic performance optimization (TPO) and advanced services such as content differentiated charging, per-subscriber stateful firewalls, and VPNs, for example. A gateway can be used to route each packet flow through the services on a per-subscriber basis by inspecting accounting messages and checking subscriber profiles prior to setting up a new packet flow session. By directing the packet flow through the services requested latency can be reduced as well as the need to have equipment for each session regardless of whether the service is provided to the packet flow. The services can be provided in-line as well.

Using time-stamped event entries to facilitate synchronizing data streams

An embodiment of a system to synchronize data streams is described. During operation, the system receives a first data stream having a first data type and performs a sequence of operations on at least a portion of the first data stream. Next, the system stores metadata associated with the first data stream one or more times during the sequence of operations. Metadata can include a time stamp, data-stream information associated with the portion of the first data stream, and event information associated with the occurrence of one or more events during the sequence of operations. Moreover, the system provides a notification based on the stored metadata, the notification to facilitate synchronizing the first data stream with a second data stream having a second data type.

Method and apparatus for secure transmission of data and applications

Authenticated transmissions are usually time-consuming and often provide delayed error recognition and correction. This is a problem particularly with hand-held computing devices like personal digital assistants (PDAs), smart phones or smartcards, since these usually possess limited memory, processing power and communications bandwidth. Because of these limitations and generally low transfer rates between the device and a provider or central computer base, such transmissions are time-consuming and delay applications. The late detection of unavoidable transmission errors is especially cumbersome. By applying an optimally taylored authentication scheme to a block-wise transmission and in particular by applying a tree structure for the authentication process during such transfers, the present invention minimes the unavoidable delays and thus provides a solution for these problems.

High performance path for command processing

Embodiments of solid-state storage system are provided herein which reduce processing delays for performance-sensitive commands. These performance-sensitive commands are typically read-write commands which can be transferred to the storage media by a high performance path to optimize responsiveness to the host. This high performance path can be enabled and disabled to prevent conflicts with commands processed via a low performance path.

Selective replication of data structures

Methods and apparatus are provided for selectively replicating a data structure in a low-latency memory. The memory includes multiple individual memory banks configured to store replicated copies of the same data structure. Upon receiving a request to access the stored data structure, a low-latency memory access controller selects one of the memory banks, then accesses the stored data from the selected memory bank. Selection of a memory bank can be accomplished using a thermometer technique comparing the relative availability of the different memory banks. Exemplary data structures that benefit from the resulting efficiencies include deterministic finite automata (DFA) graphs and other data structures that are loaded (i.e., read) more often than they are stored (i.e., written).

QoS-awar handover procedure for IP-based mobile ad-hoc network environments

The invention targets at a QoS-aware handover procedure in a typical dynamic mobile ad-hoc scenario (cf. FIGS. 23 to 27) wherein the connectivity of fixed (AR1, AR2, CN) and / or mobile nodes (MN, M1, M2, M3, M4, EN1, EN2) is unpredictably time-varying and, due to the mobility of mobile nodes, handovers will inevitably frequently occur. Thereby, resources are pre-allocated along potential routing paths in advance, and the flow traffic is redirected to the path having the best available QoS capabilities. According to the new QoS situation of the selected path, adaptive real-time applications can have the opportunity to individually adjust traffic generation. With this concept, packet loss can be avoided and degradation effects on the running real-time application during the QoS-aware handover can be minimized. The QoS-aware handover procedure comprises the steps of handover candidates selection, handover initiation, QoS metrics probing and resource pre-allocation (soft reservation), QoS metrics collection, handover decision, handover confirmation (hard reservation), and reservation release. In particular, the proposed solution thereby pertains to a method for proactively probing the QoS situation of each potential routing path, pre-allocating resources along the best available QoS path before the handover of the QoS data flow to be transmitted to a new access point (AP) is initiated, providing efficient resource reservation management and maintenance within the underlying mobile ad-hoc networks and incorporating advanced QoS support features offered by adaptive real-time applications. The invention further proposes an "information dissemination" approach, which optimizes prior-art address resolution mechanisms.

Method and system for expansion of recurring calendar events

A system and method for expanding recurring calendar events such that the retrieval of recurring calendar appointments is expedited. A recurring appointment is saved as a data structure including a recurrence pattern. When a recurring appointment is saved by a client that has sufficient processing and memory resources to perform the computations necessary to expand recurring appointments (i.e., a thick client), a background thread is notified. The background thread increases its priority to normal when idle processing capacity is available and calls a routine requesting calendar information for a defined time period. The routine causes the expansion of the data structure into the individual instances of the recurring appointment for a defined time period, and the individual instances are saved for later retrieval. A later query from a client without sufficient processing and memory resources to perform the calculations necessary to expand recurring appointments (i.e., a thin client), therefore, does not require that the expansion computations be performed contemporaneously.
