940 results about "Communication bandwidth" patented technology

Bandwidth is the capacity of a wired or wireless network communications link to transmit the maximum amount of data from one point to another over a computer network or internet connection in a given amount of time -- usually one second. Synonymous with capacity, bandwidth describes the data transfer rate.

System and method for impedance matching an antenna to sub-bands in a communication band

A sub-band antenna matching method and an antenna matching system for selectively matching a communication bandwidth segment impedance have been provided. The method comprises: accepting a frequency-dependent impedance from an antenna; and, selectively supplying a conjugate impedance match for the antenna at a sub-band of a first communication band. In some aspects, the method selectively supplies a conjugate impedance match for the antenna at a sub-band of a second communication band. More specifically, the method comprises: tuning a first tuning circuit to a first frequency; simultaneously tuning a second tuning circuit to a second frequency to match the antenna at a low end of the first communication band. Likewise, the first tuning circuit is tuned to a third frequency and the second tuning circuit is tuned to a fourth frequency to match the antenna at a high end of the first communication band in response to the third and fourth frequencies.

Method and structure for switching multiple contexts in storage subsystem target device

A storage target device controller (such as an embedded controller in a SCSI disk drive) processes multiple commands concurrently in accordance with the methods and structures of the present invention. Each command is stored within its own context within the target device controller to retain all unique parameters required for the processing of each command. Processing of multiple commands permits switching of command contexts within the target device to improve utilization of resources associated with the target device. For example, when a first, active, command context is prevented from further processing due to the status of the disk channel, an inactive command context may be swapped with the active command context to better utilize the host channel communication bandwidth. Similarly, a first active command context may be configured to automatically switch to a linked command context upon completion of processing to further ease management of multiple contexts. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a set of registers contain the active context while a second set of registers contains an inactive command context. The sets of registers are configured in such a way that the active and inactive context may be rapidly switched with no intervention by the microprocessor. The inactive register set may be read or written directly by the microprocessor, or may be automatically loaded / stored from / to a buffer memory in the target device by shifting a predetermined context structure into the inactive register set through an interface pad with the buffer memory.

Method for allocating web sites on a web hosting cluster

A method for operating a cluster of N server nodes to service client requests received on a network. Each client request is directed to one of C customers hosted on the server cluster. Each customer is identified by a domain name, and each server node is identified by an address on a network. In the method of the present invention, the customers are grouped into N groups, each group being assigned to a corresponding one of the server nodes. Configuration information is provided to a Domain Name Server (DNS), the information defining the correspondence between each of the customers and one of the server nodes assigned to one of the groups containing that customer. The DNS provides the address of the server node in response to a message specifying the domain name of the customer. The client then directs its request to the identified server node utilizing the address provided by the DNS. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the grouping of the customers depends on a measurement of the computational resources required to service the client requests for each of the customers. In embodiments in which the activity associated with each request is primarily the return of files stored in the cluster, the measurement of computational resources includes the size of the files returned by each client—within a time period and the communication bandwidth needed to service the requests.

Packet scheduling system and method for multimedia data

A method for scheduling the delivery of multimedia data packets over a communications medium with a limited bandwidth. The packets may contain data representing images, sounds, or other media which are to be delivered from a source or server to a recipient or client. The 6 method described here minimizes the delay between the point in time when a client requests the multimedia data and the point in time when the client may start presenting the data without risk of interruption, for a given communications bandwidth. This method also determines the minimum buffer sizes needed by the client in order to present this multimedia data subject to the specified bandwidth limit.

Method and apparatus for remote real time collaborative music performance and recording thereof

An improved method and apparatus are disclosed to permit real time, distributed performance by multiple musicians at remote locations, and for recording that collaboration. The latency of the communication channel is transferred to the behavior of the local instrument so that a natural accommodation is made by the musician. This allows musical events that actually occur simultaneously at remote locations to be played together at each location, though not necessarily simultaneously at all locations. This allows locations having low latency connections to retain some of their advantage. Artifacts resulting from an unreliable communication channel, for instance dropouts and jitter, are eliminated in the recorded performance. Limitations of communications bandwidth are managed in real time, with full fidelity restored in the recording.

UAV decision and control system

The present invention relates to a hierarchical system and method for task assignment (TA), coordination and communication of multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV's) engaging multiple attack targets and conceives an ad-hoc routing algorithm for synchronization of target lists utilizing a distributed computing topology. Assuming limited communication bandwidth and range, coordination of UAV motion is achieved by implementing a simple behavioral flocking algorithm utilizing a tree topology for target list routing. The TA algorithm is based on a graph-theoretic approach, in which a node locates all the detectable targets, identifies them and computes its distance to each target. The node then produces an attack plan that minimizes the sum of distances of the UAV's in the subtree of a given node to the targets.

Location Assisted Service Capability Monitoring

A digitally stored map can indicate the signal quality for each of the map's regions. A device can determine its location, speed, and direction using global positioning system (GPS) and other sensors. Based on this information, the mobile device can predict a field of locations within which the device will probably be located within a specified future time frame. Based on both the information indicating signal quality and the probable future field of locations, the device can estimate a moment at which the device will probably begin to suffer from low-quality or absent signal. Using this prediction, the device can proactively perform a variety of anticipatory remedial actions. For example, the device can begin allocating a greater portion of currently available wireless network communication bandwidth to the reception of data packets that represent content that is being streamed to the device, so that the device can proactively buffer those packets.

Method and apparatus for providing communications bandwidth to users having a committed data rate based on priority assignment

A communications system operator provides to each user of a multi-user communications system a committed information rate (CIR). When a user requests bandwidth for transmission, a system controller queues the user in a high-priority subclass A. The system controller allocates bandwidth to the user at the head of the queue as requested but if the user's bandwidth, measured as an average over a sampling time, exceeds its CIR, it is moved into a low-priority subclass B. The user can then only obtain further bandwidth after other users in the high-priority subclass have been allocated bandwidth up to their CIRs. If a user in the low-priority subclass only receives allocation of a small amount of bandwidth, so that its average inforamtion rate falls below its CIR, it is moved back in to the queue in the high-priority subclass.

Method and system for prefetching utilizing memory initiated prefetch write operations

A computer system includes a processing unit, a system memory, and a memory controller coupled to the processing unit and the system memory. According to the present invention, the memory controller accesses the system memory to obtain prefetch data and transmits the prefetch data to the processing unit in a prefetch write operation specifying the processing unit in a destination field. In one embodiment, the memory controller transmits the prefetch write operation in response to receipt of a prefetch hint from the processing unit, which may accompany a read-type request by the processing unit. This prefetch methodology may advantageously be implemented imprecisely, with the memory controller responding to the prefetch hint only if a prefetch queue is available and ignoring the prefetch hint otherwise. The processing unit may similarly ignore the prefetch write operation if no snoop queue is available. Consequently, communication bandwidth is not wasted by the memory controller or processing unit retrying prefetch operations. In addition, because the memory controller directs prefetching, the processing unit need not allocate a queue to the prefetch operation, thus reducing the number of queues required in the processing unit.
