A method of determining a channel estimate of a first transmission channel in a communications system. The method comprises deriving a first set of channel estimates from symbols received through said first transmission channel; deriving a second set of channel estimates from symbols received through a second transmission channel in the communications system; determining a scale factor between the first and second sets of channel estimates from a least squares error criterion; and determining the channel estimate of the first transmission channel as a channel estimate of the second transmission channel scaled by the determined scale factor.

An optical reader for decoding an encoded symbol character of a symbology includes a scan data signal processor having as an input a scan data signal encoding information representative of the encoded symbol character. The scan data signal processor includes a first time delay stage adapted to provide a primary phase waveform from the scan data signal, a second time delay stage adapted to provide an early phase waveform from the scan data signal, and a third time delay stage adapted to provide a delayed phase waveform from the scan data signal. The early phase waveform has a propagation delay less than the primary phase waveform, and the delayed phase waveform has a propagation delay greater than the primary phase waveform. The scan data signal processor further includes a peak window detection stage for generating a peak window timeframe when an amplitude of the primary phase waveform is greater than, less than, or equal to both an amplitude of the early phase waveform and the delayed phase waveform. The optical reader further includes a digitizer circuit adapted to accept, within the peak window timeframe, the scan data signal processor output.

In an additional embodiment, tagging of the media stream is performed at the receiver. A user at the receiver may also provide data about the user to the receiver. In yet another embodiment, the receiver uses the tags to assemble the media into a program. A method for identifying a physical location of a first automatic location identification (ALI) equipped wireless device by determining a geographic area based upon the identified physical location. In a next step, a server identifies at least a second ALI equipped wireless device located within the determined geographic area, and causes an identifier that identifies the second wireless device to be sent to the first wireless device. A user also can select the geographic region from a menu of regions. In either case, the user of the first ALI equipped wireless device can initiate communication with a user of the second wireless device, for instance using text messaging or by placing a voice call.
