Determination of a channel estimate of a transmission channel

A method of determining a channel estimate of a first transmission channel in a communications system. The method comprises deriving a first set of channel estimates from symbols received through said first transmission channel; deriving a second set of channel estimates from symbols received through a second transmission channel in the communications system; determining a scale factor between the first and second sets of channel estimates from a least squares error criterion; and determining the channel estimate of the first transmission channel as a channel estimate of the second transmission channel scaled by the determined scale factor.

A device, which is preferably embedded in a power distribution enclosure, enables analysis of conditions of electromechanical machines and, alternatively, also their driven or driver devices. The analysis uses operating voltages and currents supplied to or from the electromechanical machines. Since these voltages and currents are available at the enclosure, wiring or any other communication means to any sensors on the electromechanical machines or on the driver or driven devices are not necessary. The embedded device may optionally transmit its results to a computing or monitoring device remote from the enclosure, preferably wirelessly. The embedded device may receive all its power from an existing, conventional potential transformer in the enclosure, so that the embedded device may be retrofitted to the enclosure without the addition of any wiring external to the enclosure.

Controllable track-skipping

InactiveUS20030018797A1Good estimateRestricting skipping moreTelevision system detailsAnalogue secracy/subscription systemsComputer programDigital Millennium Copyright Act
A method, system, and computer program product allow users to skip and / or to fast-forward through media items such as songs, while limiting the extent to which skipping is allowed in order to maintain conformance with sound performance complement restrictions such as those specified by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If the user requests a skip that may result in a DMCA violation, the skip is disallowed and the request is denied. Playlists are constructed so that the sound recording performance complement limitations are applied to a longer time period than the period specified in the DMCA, the longer time period being defined by adding an "excess time" to the normal DMCA period. If the user attempts to skip a song or song portion that would cause the aggregated skipped amount to exceed the excess time, the skip is disallowed.

Uplink timing synchronization and access control for a multi-access wireless communication system

Improved timing synchronization and access control techniques for use in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) wireless system or other type of wireless communication system. In accordance with the invention, an uplink synchronization and access control system is provided in which mobile stations transmit certain timing and access signals in dedicated intervals in an uplink stream. Access control is illustratively implemented as a two-stage process in which a given mobile first transmits a generic uplink access signal in one of the intervals. If this access is accepted, the base station transmits an access acknowledgment containing initial timing and power corrections, along with initial channel assignments on which the mobile can initiate a call set-up process. For re-synchronization, mobiles transmit timing synchronization signals in the dedicated timing and access intervals. The base station measures the arrival time of the signals, and sends back appropriate timing corrections. The invention thereby ensures that orthogonality between mobiles is maintained.

Benign interference suppression for received signal quality estimation

A receiver circuit suppresses effects of “benign” impairment from the calculation of received signal quality estimates, such that the estimate depends primarily on the effects of non-benign impairment. For example, a received signal may be subject to same-cell and other-cell interference plus noise, which is generally modeled using a Gaussian distribution, and also may be due to certain forms of self-interference, such as quadrature phase interference arising from imperfect derotation of the pilot samples used to generate channel estimates for the received signal. Such interference generally takes on a distribution defined by the pilot signal modulation, e.g., a binomial distribution for binary phase shift keying modulation. Interference arising from such sources is relatively “benign” as compared to Gaussian interference and thus should be suppressed or otherwise discounted in signal quality calculations. Suppression may be based on subtracting benign impairment correlation estimates from total impairment correlation estimates, or on filtering the benign impairment in channel estimation.

Multi-antenna transmission method and system

The present invention relates to a method and system for transmitting a transmission signal from an antenna array (19) to a receiving means (20) of a wireless communication system, wherein a signal quality measurement is performed at the receiving means (20) for predetermined antennas or beams of said antenna array (19). Based on a feedback information derived from the signal quality measurement, at least two of the predetermined antennas or beams of the antenna array (19) are selected. The selected antennas or beams are used for transmitting said transmission signal according to a transmit diversity or beamforming scheme. Thus, spectral efficiency and diversity gain can be enhanced by using only selected ones of the predetermined antennas or beams.

Multiple measurements per position fix improvements

Methods and apparatuses for improved position determination of a device using multiple pseudo range measurements from transmitting sources at known locations, such as GPS satellites. A plurality of pseudo range measurements for each transmitting source are processed together to obtain a simplified maximum likelihood estimate for the pseudo range for that transmitting source at a common reference time. The processed pseudo range estimates for all transmitting sources are then combined using conventional position determination algorithms. This technique facilitates removal of raw measurement outliers prior to position determination, which results in improved (i.e., more accurate) position fixes of the device. In addition, improved measurement integrity monitoring of the pseudo range measurements is a feature of this invention.

A refined autofocus method provides optimized lighting between iterative autofocus operations, to reliably provide the best possible autofocus Z-height precision. The method includes a quantitative initial focus Z-height determination based on initial focus curve data from initial autofocus images acquired using initial light control parameters. The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for monitoring haemodynamic function in animals and humans during anaesthesia and surgery. During anaesthesia and surgery the subject's haemodynamic, respiratory, neuromuscular and neurological functions are monitored as indicators of the condition of the health of the subject. Commonly, variations in blood pressure are used to imply corresponding variations in cardiac output, i.e. good blood pressure equals good cardiac output. The present invention utilizes a device to monitor changes of blood flow in peripheral blood vessels of the subject as an indicator of cardiac output. This is believed to provide a much more accurate indicator.

Physical resynthesis of a logic design

A multiple-pass synthesis technique improves the performance of a design. In a specific embodiment, synthesis is performed in two or more passes. In a first pass, a first synthesis is performed, and in a second or subsequent pass, a second synthesis or resynthesis is performed. During the first synthesis, the logic will be mapped to for example, the logic structures (e.g., logic elements, LUTs, synthesis gates) of the target technology such as a programmable logic device. Alternatively a netlist may be provided from a third party. Before the second synthesis, a fast or abbreviated fit may be performed of the netlist to a specific device (e.g., specific programmable logic device product). Before the second synthesis, the netlist obtained from the first synthesis (or provided by a third party) is unmapped and then the second synthesis is performed. Since a partial fit is performed, the second synthesis has more visibility and optimize the logic better than by using a single synthesis pass. After the second synthesis pass, a more detailed fit is performed.
