9186 results about "Carbohydrate" patented technology

A carbohydrate (/kɑːrboʊˈhaɪdreɪt/) is a biomolecule consisting of carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) atoms, usually with a hydrogen–oxygen atom ratio of 2:1 (as in water) and thus with the empirical formula Cₘ(H₂O)ₙ (where m may be different from n). This formula holds true for monosaccharides. Some exceptions exist; for example, deoxyribose, a sugar component of DNA, has the empirical formula C₅H₁₀O₄. The carbohydrates are technically hydrates of carbon; structurally it is more accurate to view them as aldoses and ketoses.

Method and system for determining insulin dosing schedules and carbohydrate-to-insulin ratios in diabetic patients

Method for digitally determining the daily insulin regimen for a diabetic patient. The invention divides the patient's day into adjustable time intervals containing basal insulin dosage rates and Carbohydrate-to-Insulin Ratio(s) (for determining meal insulin doses). The invention identifies the Corrective Insulin doses over a time interval as an “error” in the Prescription Insulin (Basal Insulin+Meal Insulin). Methods involve first estimating the change to one of these two components of Prescription Insulin, and then determining the change to the other by subtracting from the error. One method estimates Change in Meal Insulin distributed among intervals proportional to old Meal Insulin. Another method lumps After-Meal Corrective Insulin together with Meal Insulin. Another method splits the interval at the After-Meal Corrective Dose and determines Basal from Time-Boundary Corrective Dose. Data may be obtained from the previous day, and a small fraction of error applied, leading to asymptotic reduction of error. Data may be obtained from recent history, and a larger fraction of error applied by doctor or automatic method.

Synthesis of purine locked nucleic acid analogues

The present invention relates to a new method for the synthesis of purine LNA (Locked Nucleic Acid) analogues which provides a higher overall yield. The method comprising a regioselective 9-N purine glycosylation reaction followed by a one-pot nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of the 6-substituent in the purine ring and simultaneous nucleophile-induced intramolecular ring closure of the C-branched carbohydrate to form novel purine LNA analogues. The novel strategy is illustrated by the synthesis of the novel compound (1S,3R,4R,7S)-7-benzyloxy-1-methanesulfonylmethyl-3-(guanin-9-yl)-2,5-dioxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane which is easily converted into (1S,3R,4R,7S)-7-hydroxy-1-hydroxymethyl-3-((2-N-isobutyrylguanin-9-yl)-2,5-dioxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane after isobutyryl protection of the 2-amino purine group and subsequent substitution of 1-methanesulfonyl with benzoate, debenzoylation and debenzylation.

Cyanine dyes as labeling reagents for detection of biological and other materials by luminescence methods

Cyanine and related dyes, such as merocyanine, styryl and oxonol dyes, are strongly light-absorbing and highly luminescent. Cyanine and related dyes having functional groups make them reactive with amine, hydroxy and sulfhydryl groups are covalently attached to proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, sugars, cells and combinations thereof, and other biological and nonbiological materials, to make these materials fluorescent so that they can be detected. The labeled materials can then be used in assays employing excitation light sources and luminescence detectors. For example, fluorescent cyanine and related dyes can be attached to amine, hydroxy or sulfhydryl groups of avidin and to antibodies and to lectins. Thereupon, avidin labeled with cyanine type dyes can be used to quantify biotinylated materials and antibodies conjugated with cyanine-type dyes can be used to detect and measure antigens and haptens. In addition, cyanine-conjugated lectins can be used to detect specific carbohydrate groups. Also, cyanine-conjugated fragments of DNA or RNA can be used to identify the presence of complementary nucleotide sequences in DNA or RNA.

Integrated process for separation of lignocellulosic components to fermentable sugars for production of ethanol and chemicals

A continuous and modular process converts lignocellulosic materials for the production of ethanol principally and / or chemicals such as methanol, butanediol, propanediol, hydrocarbon fuel, etc. Renewable lignocellulosic biomass such as but not all inclusive hardwoods (gum, beech, oak, sweet gum, poplar, eucalyptus, etc.), soft woods (pines, firs, spruce, etc.), corn stovers, straws, grasses, recycled papers, waste products from pulp and paper mills, etc can be used as feedstock. The process is designed to be modular and the feed entry point can be selected to adapt to different biomass feedstock. Lignocellulosic biomass such as hardwood and softwood are subjected to chemical / pressure treatment stages using potent and selective chemicals such as sodium chlorite / acetic acid (anhydrous) and chlorine / chlorine dioxide to separate the main components—lignin, cellulose (glucose) and hemicelluloses (xylose, arabinose, galactose)—into three process streams. The separated carbohydrates are further subjected to washing, cleaning, neutralization, and / or mild hydrolysis and subsequently fermented to produce ethanol. Residual lignin and extractives remained with the cellulose are removed by chemical treatment steps to enhance the fermentations of cellulose. Pre-hydrolysate after neutralization to neutralize and remove toxic components such as acetic acid, furfural, phenolics, etc. containing (xylose, arabinose, galactose) and hexoses (glucose) can be either separately or together with the purified cellulosic fraction fermented to produce ethanol. Approximately 100 gallons of ethanol, suitable to be used as a fuel, can be produced from one dried ton of wood. Significant amount of lignin are separated as a by-product and can be converted to hydrocarbon fuel, surfactant, drilling aid, or can be incinerated for generation of power and steam.

Conversion of carbohydrates to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and derivatives

A method of producing substantially pure HMF, HMF esters and other derivatives from a carbohydrate source by contacting the carbohydrate source with a solid phase catalyst. A carbohydrate starting material is heated in a solvent in a column and continuously flowed through a solid phase catalyst in the presence of an organic acid, or heated with the organic acid and a solid catalyst in solution to form a HMF ester. Heating without organic acid forms HMF. The resulting product is purified by filtration to remove the unreacted starting materials and catalyst. The HMF ester or a mixture of HMF and HMF ester may then be oxidized to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) by combining the HMF ester with an organic acid, cobalt acetate, manganese acetate and sodium bromide under pressure. Alternatively, the HMF ester may be reduced to form a furan or tetrahydrofuran diol.
