Microbially-assisted water electrolysis for improving biomethane production

A method of producing in a bioreactor a biogas rich in methane involves electrolyzing water in an aqueous medium at a voltage in a range of from 1.8 V to 12 V in the presence of electrochemically active anaerobic microorganisms that biocatalyze production of hydrogen gas, and, contacting a species of hydrogenotrophic methanogenic microorganisms with the hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide to produce methane. Volumetric power consumption is in a range of from 0.03 Wh / LR to 0.3 Wh / LR. Current density is 0.01 A / cmE2 or lower. The voltage is sufficient to electrolyze water without destroying microbial growth. Such a method results in improved electrolysis efficiency while avoiding the use of noble metal catalysts. Further, a combination of water electrolysis with anaerobic degradation of organic matter results in increased biogas quality and in increased biogas quantity and yield. Oxidation of hydrogen sulfide contributes to the increased quality, while an increase in the rate of organic matter hydrolysis and an increase in the production of methane from hydrogen contributes to the increased quantity and yield.

The electrolysis vessel comprises electrolysis chambers (10a, 10b) arranged opposite to each other with an ion-permeable separating membrane (2) interposed between, raw material water supply means (11a, 11b), electrodes (3a, 3b) so arranged as to have the separating membrane (2) between them, and electrolyzed water taking-out means (12a, 12b). The separating membrane (2) is an anion permeable membrane, and the electrodes (3a, 3b) are formed on respective sides of the anion permeable membrane (2) in an appressed manner, while leaving a portion of the anion permeable membrane (2) exposed. Only raw material water supplied to the cathode side electrolysis chamber (10b) contains an electrolyte. The electrodes (3a, 3b) are porous bodies and contain an electrode base composed of a powder titanium compound such as TiC or TiN, a catalyst such as platinum black or iridium black, and a binder such as PVA. The electrodes (3a, 3b) may have a mesh-like shape or a comb-like shape, and are formed by applying a conductive paste containing a conductive powder on respective sides of the anion permeable membrane (2) and heating or pressurizing the thus-applied paste.

During the electrolytic process, the temperature of electrolysis is higher than the melting point of the rare earth metal alloy produced and lower than the melting point of the negative electrode; the surface layer of the positive electrode is in the first stage electrolyzed to a liquid metal film which accumulates to a certain volume before falling to the crucible at the bottom. The current density of the negative electrode is sufficient to separate out from said negative electrode the components of the rare earth metal alloy. The electrolysis voltage is lower than the decomposition potential of the electrolyte and higher than the decomposition potential of the oxides corresponding to each component of the rare earth metal alloy. A crucible is used to collect the rare earth metal and the alloy obtained through the present method. The present method is technically simple and environmentally-friendly, while featuring low energy consumption, high current efficiency, and low costs.

The method is short in technological process, hardly pollutes the environment and and is suitable for development and application of low-grade high-iron and high-phosphor manganese ores.
