Device and method for monitoring body fluid and electrolyte disorders

A device and a method for measuring body fluid-related metrics using spectrophotometry to facilitate therapeutic interventions aimed at restoring body fluid balance. The specific body fluid-related metrics include the absolute volume fraction of water in the extravascular and intravascular tissue compartments, as well as the shifts of water between these two compartments. The absolute volume fraction of water is determined using algorithms where received radiation measured at two or more wavelengths are combined to form either a single ratio, a sum of ratios or ratio of ratios of the form log[R(λ1) / R(λ2)] in which the received radiation in the numerator depends primarily on the absorbance of water and the received radiation in the denominator depends primarily on the absorbance of water and the sum of the absorbances of non-heme proteins, lipids and water in tissue. The difference between the fraction of water in the intravascular fluid volume (“IFV”) and extravascular fluid volume (“EFV”) compartments are also determined using a differential method that takes advantage of the observation that pulsations caused by expansion of blood vessels in the skin as the heart beats produce changes in the received radiation at a particular wavelength that are proportional to the difference between the effective absorption of light in the blood and the surrounding tissue. This difference, integrated over time, provides a measure of the quantity of the fluid that shifts into and out of the capillaries. A mechanism for mechanically inducing a pulse is built into the device to improve the reliability of measurements of IFV−EFV under weak-pulse conditions.

System and method for combining multiple video streams

An operation for combining multiple video streams permits combining any number of overlay images and base images regardless of processes performed upon one or more of the images. Specifically, where the base images are dynamically sized and resized to provide a constant frame rate (despite varying frame complexity), the process similarly treats overlay images and even other base images. In the dynamic sizing process, a rendering time is compared to high and low water marks. During dynamic resizing, two double buffering operations and a synchronization operation are performed. After dynamic sizing and resizing, the resulting resized images are combined together, regardless of the frame rate of the individual images. Consequently, multiple video streams at varying frame rates are combined at a constant frame rate.

Neural networked irrigation controller

A device which is neural networked with other such devices to control the irrigation of various irrigation zones. Each neural networked irrigation controller commences irrigation for its zone, provided sufficient water is available, either when a preselected period of time arrives or sensed zonal conditions so dictate. The determination of adequacy of water in the source forms the basis for neural networking. Each controller senses water level or pressure in the source and has its own initial water threshold value-a level or pressure at which irrigation will be permitted to commence. Optionally, each controller may have its own terminal water threshold value-a level or pressure which must be maintained in order for irrigation of the zone to continue. Thus, the controllers communicate hydraulically with one another. When a controller causes irrigation to commence, the water level or pressure in the source is lowered, and all controllers sense this and have their decisions affected accordingly; conversely, when a controller terminates irrigation, all controllers sense an increase in water level or pressure. If sufficient water is available in the source, irrigation of a zone will continue until either all zonal conditions have reached their specified terminal zonal threshold value or a specified period of time has passed. The start of irrigation may alternatively occur when a specified period of time has been reached.

Heat pump hot water supply system of hot water storage type

When heating up the water in the lower inner part of a hot water tank by a heat pump unit, a control unit stops the heat-up operation while leaving the hot water in an amount corresponding to the residual water capacity in the hot water tank detected by water level thermistors. In the heat-up operation in the hot water tank, the residual hot water capacity in the tank is first detected, then the heat-up operation is stopped when the residual hot water reaches an amount corresponding to the detected residual hot water capacity. At this point, the hot water is stored so that the hot water newly heated up by the heat pump unit is laid above the residual hot water for the preceding day. Consequently, the reduction in the operating efficiency of the heat pump cycle is prevented without supplying the medium-temperature residual hot water to a condenser.
