The methodology may be used to decide whether or not to implement a strategy. Alternatively, it may be used to decide which competing strategy will yield the maximum benefit. In another embodiment of the present invention, the value of information obtained from the installation of additional sensors or new measurements is also considered.

Systems and methods which implement surrogate (e.g., approximation) models to systematically reduce the parameter space in an optimization problem are shown. In certain embodiments, rigorous (e.g., higher fidelity) models are implemented with respect to the reduced parameter space provided by use of surrogate models to efficiently and more rapidly arrive at an optimized solution. Accordingly, certain embodiments build surrogate models of an actual simulation, and systematically reduce the number of design parameters used in the actual simulation to solve optimization problems using the actual simulation. A multi-stage method that facilitates optimization of decisions related to development planning and reservoir management may be provided. Iterative processing may be implemented with respect to a multi-stage optimization method. There may be uncertainty in various parameters, such as in reservoir parameters, which is taken into account according to certain embodiments.

A permanent monitoring tool is provided and disposed in a wellbore. Measurements are made at different times using the permanent monitoring tool on a region of a formation penetrated by the wellbore. One or more properties of the formation are inferred at one or more depths of investigation within the region using the measurements. Any changes in the one or more inferred formation properties are determined and one or more reservoir management decisions are made based on the determined changes. The well may be an observation well, an injector well, or a production well. The permanent monitoring tool may be a magnetic resonance tool or an electromagnetic tool. The measurements may be stacked to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the signal. Different depths of investigation may be selected using antenna arrays of different lengths. The inferred properties may be saturation or resistivity. Conductive or non-conductive casing may be used.
