System and method for managing information for a plurality of computer systems in a distributed network

A system for managing computers in a distributed computer network includes a collection agent for each computer being monitored, a local database coupled to each collection agent, one or more condensing agents coupled to the databases, and at least one console module. The condensing agent generates an index table from a source database and sends it upstream to the next level up in the hierarchy of databases. Other condensing agents may in turn act on this index table and send it up to a still further level, until a top-level master node has an index table reflecting the entire network. The console can use the index table to identify what databases contain needed data, and then make only selective connections to databases to answer queries, avoiding connections to all the local databases. The condensing agent also produces summarized data and sends it upstream as well, to be used by the console. Efficiency is improved over conventional systems. Use of the index method and the summary method can be transparent to (hid from) the user of the console, or may be made visible, with selection options.

Method and apparatus for automatically storing and retrieving selected document sections and user-generated notes

A method for selecting and saving information in a single user action. A user selects, with a computer input device such as a mouse, a document section having text and / or images from a primary document such as a web page displayed in a window of a primary document display program such as a web browser associated with a document section acquisition program. The selected document section is automatically, with no further user action required, transmitted over a network to a server computer and stored. Multiple document sections from one or more primary documents may be similarly stored. The document sections may then be transmitted to a document viewing program and displayed in a document viewer window. The user may select which document sections to retrieve and display, which are then assembled into a document at the document viewing program. Notes may also be added by the user in association with a selected document section. The assembled document may be saved as a scrapbook, printed, sent to a word processing program, and the like.

Preservation by Vaporization

Significant research is being done to develop and improve delivery mechanisms for biopharmaceuticals and vaccines, including pulmonary (inhalation), nasal, transdermal, and oral alternatives. Market projections indicate that the delivery of proteins and vaccines by inhalation and oral formulation has become and will continue to be increasingly important. These delivery mechanisms, to be effective, will require better stabilization of the biologicals so that they can maintain potency and effectiveness at ambient temperatures for extended periods of time. The novel Preservation by Vaporization (PBV) Technology described herein provides cost-effective and efficient industrial scale stabilization of proteins, viruses, bacteria, and other sensitive biologicals, thereby allowing a production of products that are not possible to be produced by existing methods. The suggested new PBV process comprises primary drying under vacuum from a partially frozen state (i.e. slush) at near subzero temperatures followed by stability drying at elevated temperatures (i.e., above 40 degrees Celsius). The new suggested method can be performed aseptically in unit doze format (in vials) and/or in bulk format (in trays, bags, or other containers). The drying can be performed as a continuous load process in a manifold vacuum dryer comprising a plurality (e.g., 30) of vacuum chambers attached to a condenser during the drying.

Methods and apparatus for storing and manipulating variable length and fixed length data elements as a sequence of fixed length integers

Apparatus for storing and processing a plurality of data items each comprising supplied data values organized in one or more fields each of which stores typed data. Character strings and natural language text are converted to numerical token values in an array of fixed length integers and other forms of typed data (real numbers, dates, times, boolean values, etc.) are also converted to integer form and stored in the array. Stored metadata specifies the data type of all data in the integer array to enable each integer to be rapidly accessed and interpreted. When fixed length data types are present, the metadata specifies location, size and type of each fixed length element. When variable length data is stored in the integer array, size and location data stored in the integer array is accessed to rapidly and directly access the variable size data. The presence of implicit or explicit size information for each data structure, including variable size structures, speeds processing by eliminating the need to scan the data for delimiters, and by reducing the processing needed to perform memory allocation, data movement, lookup operations and data addressing functions. Data stored in the integer array is subdivided into items, and items are subdivided into fields. Items may be organized into more complex data structures, such as relational tables, hierarchical object structures, linked lists and trees, and the like, using special fields called links which identify other referenced items.

Enhanced pumped storage power system

InactiveUS7003955B2Facilitates initial construction of systemEffective resourcesFluid couplingsFrom solar energyTerrainElectric power system
An enhanced pumped storage power system. More particularly, the invention is a regenerative power system that utilizes the gravitational forces of downward movement of large quantities of water to convert same to electrical energy. In the preferred mode of implementation, the system utilizes a man-made lake at a first level of elevation. Though higher altitudes can be effective, the lake need only be approximately twenty to thirty feet in elevation. The lake, which may exceed one hundred acres in size, may be elevated above and adjacent a natural body of water, such as seawater at a coastline. As such, sandy terrain associated with the region facilitates initial construction of the system. An underground generator is utilized for the power conversion and pumping of the water back to the upper reservoir during times of low energy demand, allowing for significant noise reduction. Importantly, the system of the present invention may be utilized to provide significant levels of power to serve relatively large geographic areas during times of peak energy demand, when other sources of power are more expensive and subject to power outages. Finally, it should be noted that the components of the system are aesthetically-pleasing in nature, allowing the system to be effectively utilized in a residential area.

System and method for improved retroactive recording and/or replay

One of the most frustrating things when recording for example songs from the radio is that many times by the time the user decides that he / she would like to record for example some song, the beginning of the song is already lost. Or the user might zap between radio stations and tune into the station after the song has already started or for example after the beginning of an interesting conversation or message or News item and is frustrated that he missed the beginning of it. Similarly, for example while zapping through cable TV stations, a user might find for example a fascinating scientific program or a fascinating report and regret that he / she had not seen or recorded it from the start for later reference. The idea of retroactive recording and / or replay has existed already since 1990 and there are a number of patents about it, but they do not deal with the problem of enabling retroactive recording and / or replay also when the user is zapping between channels for example on Radio or on TV. The present invention describes an improved system and method for automatic time-shifted retroactive recording or replay, that applies retroactive recording and / or replay also to a situation of switching between channels. Additional improvements and possible implementations are also shown, including for example improved zapping speed which can be used also without retroactive replay / recording.
