Oxygen scavenging compositions and methods of use

Oxygen is removed or maintained in a sealed container by electrochemically reducing the oxygen to water using an enzymatic O2 scavenging system based on a laccase enzyme. Activation of the O2 scavenging system typically occurs by water (liquid or vapor) adsorption; in preferred embodiments, ascorbate and isoascorbate (and their corresponding acids) are especially advantageous for their dual role as reductant and hygroscopic agent. The capacity of the O2 scavenging system can be manipulated by altering the concentration of reductant that is included in the O2 scavenging composition. The O2 scavenging system can be prepared in a variety of formats (e.g., inks, labels, packets, liners, patches, caps, within the packaging material itself) and is readily produced by apparatuses conventionally used in the industry on a high speed continuous basis.

Solid adsorption moisture eliminator based on semiconductor refrigeration

The invention relates to a semiconductor refrigeration-based solid absorption dehumidifier and belongs to the technical field of air dehumidifiers. The dehumidifier is characterized by comprising a semiconductor cooler, a first solid hygroscopic agent adhered on a cold end of the semiconductor cooler for dehumidifying processed air and a second solid hygroscopic agent adhered on the hot end of the semiconductor cooler for regenerated air to carry away the water absorbed by the second solid hygroscopic agent. After a half period, under a condition of constant air ducts used by the process air and the regenerated air, the semiconductor cooler is rotated 180 degrees and the direction of the current in the semiconductor cooler is changed at the same time, or an air valve changes instead of the rotation of the semiconductor cooler. Meanwhile, the solid hygroscopic cooler can be adhered on the cold end and the hot end of the semiconductor cooler indirectly through the fin extended surface heat exchanger or a heat tube exchanger. A plurality of the dehumidifiers can be connected serially to form a multistage dehumidifier. The application has the advantages of greatly improving the efficiency of semiconductor refrigeration.

Delivery of Submicrometer and Nanometer Aerosols to the Lungs Using Hygroscopic Excipients or Dual Stream Nasal Delivery

Pharmaceutically engineered aerosols (e.g. submicrometer and nano-particles and droplets) containing a hygroscopic growth excipient or agent are employed to improve the delivery of respiratory aerosols to the lung. Inclusion of the hygroscopic agent results in near zero depositional loss in the nose-mouth-throat regions and near 100% deposition of the aerosol in the lung. Targeting of the aerosol to specific lung depths is also possible. In addition, methods and apparatuses for delivering aerosols to the lung are provided. The aerosol is delivered to one nostril of a patient while a relatively high humidity gaseous carrier is delivered to the other nostril, resulting in post-nasopharyngeal growth of the aerosol to a size that promotes deposition in the lung.

Hygroscopic treatment for degenerating discs

InactiveUS20080097229A1Promote hydrationMedical devicesCatheterTissue hydrationMedicine
Early treatment for a degenerated disc includes identifying a non-ruptured, dehydrated disc. A hygroscopic agent is then selected. This agent should pull water towards itself and have a hygroscopic compound with a molecular weight of at least 400 Daltons. Additionally, it may be desirable to selected hygroscopic compounds that are anionic or electrically neutral. The hygroscopic agent is then injected into the nucleus pulposus of the disc without any prior removal of the nucleus pulposus material. Because the surrounding disc structure allows for the passive diffusion of water into the nucleus pulposus, the hygroscopic agent will draw water into the nucleus pulposus, thus promoting tissue hydration within the disc. The hygroscopic agent may also include a biological agent and / or an imaging agent.
