An autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle (“AUV”) includes a body, a controller, a buoyancy engine, a rotary propulsion system and pitch control surface(s). The buoyancy engine is for alternately ingesting and expelling ambient water to change the mass of the AUV and thereby cause the AUV to alternately descend and ascend in the water. The pitch control surface(s) are for causing the AUV to move forward while alternately descending and ascending in the water. The rotary propulsion system includes a motor for rotating a propeller in the water to provide thrust. The controller is operative for responsively, automatically switching between at least the glider and rotary propulsion modes. In the glider mode, the buoyancy engine and the pitch control surface(s) are cooperative for causing the AUV to move forward while alternately descending and ascending. In the rotary propulsion mode, the rotary propulsion system is operative for causing the AUV to move forward.

Gas generating process for propulsion and hydrogen production

A gas generating process, which is for the continuous production of energy and hydrogen for rocket and other propulsion and is also for the continuous production of hydrogen, utilizes the reaction of metallic materials, particularly aluminum, with organic materials, particularly hydrocarbons provided as jet fuel, and with water or an oxidizer which is predominantly water. In comparison with related reactions, the reaction produces hot gases containing more hydrogen and the products have a lower temperature for the same specific impulse. The process incorporates organic liquids with metallic powders to produce desirable, lower molecular weight exhaust gas products; and the increased hydrogen is desirable for use with a fuel cell and in connection with propulsion of a super-cavitating underwater device. The process is advantageous in that a metal, in powdered form, and a hydrocarbon liquid may be provided together as a slurry or gel for effective metering. The metallic material may also be provided with the organic material in the form of a binder as used in solid propellants, and the organic material and water may be provided together in the form of a water containing liquid monopropellant. The hydrogen containing product gases from the reaction may be further reacted with suitable oxidizers for production of additional energy or steam. The reaction is particularly useful for underwater vehicles where ambient water is available and the reaction products may be used for propulsion.

An underwater diving light includes efficient cooling of LEDs and other internal electronics by heat transfer to ambient water. The water is in contact with a metallic face plate or puck that conducts heat via contiguous metal from an LED circuit board or LED face plate. Ambient water can enter the assembly to spaces between the face plate and an intermediary plate at the front of a housing to efficiently cool the LEDs and associated electronics. In a high-output form the light can emit 8000 lumens, and in this embodiment the battery is cooled by ambient water. The face plate or puck is interchangeable, for different lighting characteristics.

A series of helical Savonius turbine generators for use in the ocean, each turbine generator being an independent system, but all sharing a common mooring / bus-bar cable. An anchor connects one generator to the ocean floor, and a buoyancy device system buoys the turbines so that they can generate power from passing currents. The generators are coreless, and generate electrical or hydraulic power. The turbine blades rotate on bearings that are lubricated with ambient water. A control system separately tracks the power generation level of each turbine, and controls the buoyancy of the buoyancy device system.

The threshold pressure that must be overcome to achieve exhalation may be balanced against the compressive forces of the ambient water pressure acting against the user's chest and lungs, which may greatly reduce the resting expiratory flow rate, the minute respiratory rate, and therefore the overall work of breathing. The exhalation pressure may be linearly matched to the ambient water pressure as a function of dive depth, thereby discouraging exhalation while diving. A purge valve may also be placed at the lower aspect of the snorkel.

A system has a source of gas venting gas at a nose portion of the vehicle to create a gas / vapor cavity on the nose portion and an adjacent hull of the vehicle. A thermal engine propelling the vehicle through ambient water creates waste heat for heating the hull to raise the temperature of the gas / vapor cavity extending over it. A pump aft on the vehicle recirculates a portion of the gas / vapor cavity as recirculated gas to the nose portion. The velocity of the recirculated gas of the gas / vapor cavity is controlled by the pump to be virtually the same as the relative flow rate of the ambient water along an interface boundary between the gas / vapor cavity and the ambient water.

Photodynamic-based drinking water disinfection method

The invention provides a photodynamic-based drinking water disinfection method which comprises the following steps: 1. adding curcumin into water; and 2. disinfecting the curcumin-added water obtained in the step 1 by irradiation with a light source. The physical and chemical processes are combined by compounding the food-grade curcumin with the special-wavelength light, so that no harmful byproduct can be generated after photodynamic disinfection, and no secondary pollution can be generated on the ambient water body; and thus, the method overcomes the defects in the existing domestic water disinfection technique, so that the total bacterial count and chroma of the water body satisfy the water standard requirements. The method has the advantages of high operating safety, low cost and simple process, is easy to operate, and has favorable disinfection effects on seawater as well as mineral water and barreled water placed for some time.

Method and apparatus for controlling drainage and irrigation of fields

A method of and apparatus for controlling drainage / irrigation of a field includes laying out a network of drainage tiles, which typically may include a main line and a number of lateral lines, extending from higher elevations to lower elevations and exiting through a manually controlled main valve to a drainage ditch.A series of level-responsive valves are incorporated in the main and lateral lines at selected elevations. Each level-responsive valve is normally open until the ambient water level reaches a predetermined level relative to the valve. When the manual valve is closed and a certain level of water is reached adjacent a level-responsive valve, it causes that level-responsive valve to close, thereby cutting off drainage of higher elevations. When it is desired to retain water at higher elevations in a field, the manual valve is closed permitting water to accumulate and be retained at higher elevations by closing the level-responsive valves in sequence at progressively higher elevations as the level of retained water rises, thereby causing a cascading or “terracing” of water stored at upper levels. When the manual valve is opened, the field drains normally. The level-responsive valve may be a flotation valve. A modification of a flotation type level-responsive valve includes an overflow tube which permits excessive water at higher placement elevations to bypass the closed level-responsive valves, thereby permitting the field to drain under conditions of excess water into a standpipe at the manual valve.

The invention discloses a cadmium ion imprinted adsorbent, and a preparation method and application thereof, belonging to the technical field of preparation adsorbing materials. The preparation method comprises the following steps: (1) forming a chelate from cadmium ions and functional monomers; (2) crosslinking the chelate into a polymer under the action of a crosslinking agent; and (3) washing the polymer with an eluate to remove the cadmium ions to form the cadmium ion imprinted adsorbent. The cadmium ion imprinted adsorbent disclosed by the invention is prepared by a mass polymerization method, and synthesizes a solid-phase extraction material by using methacrylic acid and 4-vinyl pyridine as the functional monomers and ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate as the crosslinking agent; and the solid-phase extraction material has the advantages of high bonding firmness, stable properties, favorable reproducibility and high selectivity. The adsorbent can be used in enrichment pretreatment of trace amounts of Cd (II) in an ambient water sample.
