System and method for tissue sealing

An electrosurgical bipolar forceps for sealing is disclosed. The forceps includes one or more shaft members having an end effector assembly disposed at the distal end. The end effector assembly includes two jaw members movable from a first position to a closed position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue at constant pressure. Each of the jaw members includes an electrically conductive sealing plate connected to a first energy source which communicates electrosurgical energy through the tissue held therebetween. The electrosurgical energy is communicated at constant voltage. The electrically conductive sealing plates are operably connected to sensor circuitry which is configured to measure initial tissue impedance and transmit an initial impedance value to a controller. The controller determines the constant pressure and the constant voltage to be applied to the tissue based on the initial impedance value.

Bipolar surgical instruments having focused electrical fields

A bipolar surgical device comprises a pair of actuable jaws. A first electrode member which optionally includes a line of electrically coupled tissue-penetrating elements is formed on one of the jaws, and a second electrode member which optionally includes a line of electrically coupled tissue-penetrating elements is formed on the same or the other jaw. The electrode members are laterally spaced-apart and arranged in a parallel, usually linear manner so that the lateral distance therebetween remains generally constant. In operation, tissue may be grasped between the jaws so that the electrode members contact and / or the tissue-penetrating elements enter into the tissue. By energizing the electrode members at opposite polarities using a high frequency energy source, tissue between the jaws will be heated, coagulated, and / or necrosed, while heating of tissue outside of the lines will be minimized.

Transmural ablation device with EKG sensor and pacing electrode

An apparatus for transmural ablation using an instrument containing two electrodes. The electrodes extend along the surfaces of mating jaw members which are moveable between open and clamped positions. The electrodes are connected to an RF energy source so that, when activated, they are of opposite polarity. An EKG sensor is located on one of the jaw members and spaced from the electrode so that, when the electrodes are activated to form a line of ablation, the EKG sensor contacts the tissue outside the line of ablation. A pacing electrode is located on one of the jaw members so as to be on the opposite side of the line of ablation from the EKG sensor. Thus, if the line of ablation is not transmural, the EKG sensor will be able to detect signals generated by the pacing electrode.
