A method of performing radiation therapy includes delivering a therapeutic dose such as X-ray only to a target (e.g., tumor) with continuous broad beam (or in-effect continuous) using arrays of parallel planes of radiation (microbeams / microplanar beams). Microbeams spare normal tissues, and when interlaced at a tumor, form a broad-beam for tumor ablation. Bidirectional interlaced microbeam radiation therapy (BIMRT) uses two orthogonal arrays with inter-beam spacing equal to beam thickness. Multidirectional interlaced MRT (MIMRT) includes irradiations of arrays from several angles, which interleave at the target. Contrast agents, such as tungsten and gold, are administered to preferentially increase the target dose relative to the dose in normal tissue. Lighter elements, such as iodine and gadolinium, are used as scattering agents in conjunction with non-interleaving geometries of array(s) (e.g., unidirectional or cross-fired (intersecting) to generate a broad beam effect only within the target by preferentially increasing the valley dose within the tumor.

The disclosed invention is a unique, patient-friendly, laser-based tumor ablation system for the removal of malignant tumors of the prostate and, with modified delivery systems, may have application for other areas of the human body.
The disclosed invention is an integrated, robotic treatment subsystem that takes advantage of the capabilities of the previously disclosed MedSci Detection, Mapping and Confirmation System, for the purpose of providing a patient friendly system and method for removing tumors detected by said diagnostic system. The invention is a laser-based endosurgical thermal treatment system that utilizes historical cancer mapping data together with real-time ultrasonic and other data to reliably target and control the eradication of cancer conditions. The system contains computer aided robotic control such that control of the boundary, size, position and orientation of the ablated volume of tissue has a tolerance of less than a millimeter. The disclosed system provides multimodal scanning methods for improved identification and localization of detected tumors, including multi-focal tumors. The disclosed system also provides multiple methods for monitoring the successful progress and conclusion of the treatment. The disclosed system provides the capability of closing the created cavity. The disclosed system resides in a subsystem module and when treatment is to be conducted, the treatment module is substituted in place of the previously disclosed ultrasonic diagnostic module of the MedSci system. The subject thermal treatment system meets the challenges confronting the advancement of thermal treatment systems in the search for a highly effective and patient-friendly cancer treatment.

Apparatus and method for shielding tissue during tumor ablation

The present invention provides improved methods, systems, and kits for protecting body tissues which are adjacent to tissues undergoing thermal treatment. Thermal treatment is often prescribed for tumors and other disease conditions within body organs and other tissue masses. The methods, systems, and kits are particularly useful for treating tumors which lie at or near the surface of an organ, such as the kidney, pancreas, stomach, spleen, and particularly the liver. One risk of treating such tumors is the possibility of mistargeting the tumor and penetrating a delivery cannula or portions of a treatment device beyond the surface into the adjacent tissues or organs. In the case of radiofrequency or electrosurgical treatment, healthy surrounding tissue may be directly ablated. An additional risk, present even when the tumor is correctly targeted, is the possibility of thermal damage to the surrounding, non-targeted tissue. In radiofrequency or electrosurgical treatment, heat may dissipate into surrounding tissues which are more fragile and heat sensitive than the tissue in the organ being treated, thus causing unwanted tissue damage. These risks and others may be lessened or avoided with the use of an interface shield between the target region and adjacent body tissues to shield surrounding organs and tissue from treatment effects.

Additionally, a position of the ablation instrument may be dynamically displayed on the fluoroscopic image and / or the at least one acquired image during tumor ablation. Furthermore, a location cursor on the fluoroscopic image may be linked with a location cursor on the one or more acquired images. In certain embodiments, a location of a tip of the ablation instrument may be dynamically displayed with respect to a starting location and an ending location of the tumor.
