Apparatus for imparting physician-determined shapes to implantable tubular devices

A tubular sleeve is provided for enabling a physician to impart a preselected shape in an implantable tubular device, such as a cardiac lead, a catheter, or some other tubular structure. The sleeve may be deformed by the surgeon before or at the time of implantation to customize the shape of the tubular device to the particular anatomical structures to be encountered by the device. To retain the deformation imparted by the physician, the sleeve may be composed of a heat-sensitive shape-memory material or an elastomeric material provided with a plastically deformable rib.

Method of determining the nucleotide sequence of oligonucleotides and DNA molecules

The present invention relates to a novel method for analyzing nucleic acid sequences based on real-time detection of DNA polymerase-catalyzed incorporation of each of the four nucleotide bases, supplied individually and serially in a microfluidic system, to a reaction cell containing a template system comprising a DNA fragment of unknown sequence and an oligonucleotide primer. Incorporation of a nucleotide base into the template system can be detected by any of a variety of methods including but not limited to fluorescence and chemiluminescence detection. Alternatively, microcalorimetic detection of the heat generated by the incorporation of a nucleotide into the extending template system using thermopile, thermistor and refractive index measurements can be used to detect extension reactions.

Polydimethylsiloxane with initiator on surface and its preparation method and use

The invention relates to polydimethylsiloxane which is provided with an initiator at the surface, and is the silicon-hydrogen bonding cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane, of which the surface contains 0.01 to 1At percent 2-bromine-2-methyl propioric acid 10-undecene ester. The material is formed by mixing a polymer precursor, a cross-liner and the initiator with olefinic end in the weight ratio of 10: 1: 4-0.01 and placing for 6 to 24 hours. The polydimethylsiloxane with the initiator at the surface which is provided by the invention further modifies a function layer on the surface by triggering the polymerization reaction on the surface, so the polydimethylsiloxane can be applied on biocompatible, organic solvent compatible and thermal sensitive materials. The invention uses the simple and convenient method to realize the universal, permanent, diverse and functional surface modified polydimethylsiloxane.

Thermal response correction system

Techniques are disclosed for performing thermal history control in a thermal printer in which a single thermal print head prints sequentially on multiple color-forming layers in a single pass. Each pixel-printing interval may be divided into subintervals, which may be of unequal duration. Each sub-interval may be used to print a different color. The manner in which the input energy to be provided to each print head element is selected may be varied for each of the subintervals. For example, although a single thermal model may be used to predict the temperature of the print head elements in each of the subintervals, different parameters may be used in the different subintervals. Similarly, different energy computation functions may be used to compute the energy to be provided to the print head in each of the subintervals based on the predicted print head temperature.

System and method for electrically determining position and detachment of an implantable device

A method and system for positioning a detachment zone and an implant, such as a vaso-occlusive coil or a stent, attached thereto in a body. A catheter is inserted within a vascular cavity in the body. The implant is attached to a distal end of a delivery member using a temporary connection, such as an electrolytic, mechanical, hydraulic, heat-sensitive or Radio Frequency (RF) sensitive connection, with an insulation member between the wire and the implant. The delivery member, temporary connection and implant are advanced through the catheter. An electrical condition, such as current, voltage and impedance, related to the position of the temporary connection in the catheter is monitored with an electrical measurement device or sensor. The electrical condition changes when the temporary connection reaches or exits a predetermined location, for example, the distal end of the catheter and contacts a conductive component of the body, such as blood in an aneurysm.

Optical element to reshape light with color and brightness uniformity

A light valve such as an active matrix LCD between crossed polarizers, utilizing, for instance, individual transistors to control each "pixel area" of the LCD and storage elements to store video signal data for each pixel, with optically shielded "dead spaces" between pixels to eliminate electric field cross-talk and non-information-bearing light bleed-through, is illuminated with a bright independent light source which creates a video image projected via specialized projection optics onto an internal or external screen without distortions, regardless of the angle of projection onto the screen. Use of heat sinks, IR reflective coatings, heat absorbing optics, optional fluid and a thermistor controlled pixel transistor bias voltage injection servo circuit stabilizes image performance, maintaining accurate color and contrast levels as the LCD changes temperature. In one embodiment of the invention, use of a multi-color LCD with a stepped cavity, producing different thicknesses of LCD for the different wavelengths that pass through it, allows a linear correspondence between the wavelengths passing through the LCD to produce true black, high contrast and CRT-like color rendition. A dichroic mirror arrangement is used to overlap differently colored pixels in the projected image. Use of striped mirrors duplicate pixels, where necessary, eliminating spaces between pixels, creating a continuous image with no apparent stripes or dots. A special venetian-blind type of screen is also disclosed and methods for using the system to view three-dimensional video are also explained.

Encapsulation of sensitive liquid components into a matrix to obtain discrete shelf-stable particles

InactiveUS7201923B1Improve hydrophobicityPrevent and delays penetration of waterPowder deliveryBiocideSolid particleHeat sensitive
A liquid encapsulant component which contains an active, sensitive encapsulant, such as a live microorganism or an enzyme dissolved or dispersed in a liquid plasticizer is admixed with a plasticizable matrix material. The matrix material is plasticizable by the liquid plasticizer and the encapsulation of the active encapsulant is accomplished at a low temperature and under low shear conditions. The active component is encapsulated and / or embedded in the plasticizable matrix component or material in a continuous process to produce discrete, solid particles. The liquid content of the liquid encapsulant component provides substantially all or completely all of the liquid plasticizer needed to plasticize the matrix component to obtain a formable, extrudable, cuttable, mixture or dough. Removal of liquid plasticizer prior to extrusion is not needed to adjust the viscosity of the mixture for formability. Release of an active component from the matrix may be delayed or controlled over time so that the active component is delivered when and where it is needed to perform its intended function. Controlled release, discrete, solid particles which contain an encapsulated and / or embedded component such as a heat sensitive or readily oxidizable pharmaceutically, biologically, or nutritionally active component are continuously produced without substantial destruction of the matrix material or encapsulant.

Electrically-operated temperature-regulated scented wax warmer

An electrically operated scented wax holder that forms a receptacle for receiving unmelted blocks of wax which are heated to the melting point and thereafter maintained at a safe temperature by a temperature-regulated electrical heating element. The wax receptacle is removable mounted on a base section that houses a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor which has a transition temperature substantially higher than the melting point of the wax to insure that the wax is rapidly melted, but substantially below the temperature that would constitute a danger to a human who might touch the exterior surface of the warmer, or constitute a fire hazard. The heating element is preferably placed in thermal contact with a contact pad having high thermal conductivity that is in turn placed closely adjacent to the wax receptacle, thereby efficiently transferring heat from the electrically operated temperature regulated heating element to the wax in the receptacle. A switch is positioned to de-energize the heating element whenever the wax receptacle is removed from the base section, and a visible pilot light is illuminated whenever the heating element is energized.
