In an alternate embodiment, the linker molecule may be covalently attached to a non-antigenic site on the cell surface, but will camouflage the antigenic determinant on the cell surface. A multi-well helium Dewar is provided for recirculating coolant about a cryostat probe; the Dewar includes a first well containing a first coolant reservoir, and a second well containing a second coolant reservoir. A fluid connection extends between the first and second coolant reservoirs. A low impedance conduit further connects a top end of the second well to the first well. In this regard, the Dewar at least partially contains a cryocooler within the first well and a cryostat probe within the second well. Vibrational noise is reduced by the incorporation of soft mounting components for connecting various features. A thermal shield of the Dewar can be thermally connected to isolated components for additional cooling power and increased efficiency during initialization. A second fluid connection may include a valve attached to a counter-flow heat exchanger for efficiently re-condensing excess gas within the Dewar.

The invention relates to MFPW radar level gauging with a distance approximation. The level gauging includes an approxiamtion of a distance to the surface of a product kept in a tank. The approxiamtion is determined by relating an amplitude of a first harmonic of an IF signal with an amplitude of a second harmonic of the IF signal. Basically, each harmonics represents a given distance range. By determining the received power in two or more harmonics, and correlating them to each other, the distance may be estimated. Depending on modulation and other parameters the distance dependence may be very different, and may be selected to suit the application.

Measuring The Activity Of Proteases

A method and apparatuses for determining the total content of proteases by means of measuring their enzyme activity after previous deinhibition is disclosed. In biological samples, lysosomal proteases are completely (e.g. in blood serum) or partly (e.g. in tissue homogenates) inhibited. A method proposed for the deinhibition entails immersing a solid support material (e.g. nylon or nitrocellulose) as plastic strip to which is linked, covalently or by adsorption, an inhibitor-binding substance which binds the inhibitor corresponding to the protease more strongly than the protease in the sample for measurement. After the deinhibition has taken place, the plastic strip is removed from the liquid sample for measurement, and the sample for measurement is passed on for measurement of the enzyme activity. Fluorogenic substrates from which the fluorogen 7-amino-4-trifluoromethylcoumarin is eliminated proved to be particularly advantageous for the activity measurement. These substrates make it possible for the sensitivity on measurement in microtitre plates with a fluorescence reader to be at least 10 times higher compared with conventional AMC substrates in blood serum, and thus for the fluorimetric determination of such enzyme activities in blood serum to be efficient with this measuring arrangement which is widely used in clinical laboratories.

The invention relates to the determination of resistances of microorganisms which produce β-lactamases, in particular “extended spectrum β-lactamases” (ESBL). The invention provides a method whereby the microbial resistance can be measured very simply and quickly by means of the catalytic effect of the microbially produced β-lactamases on β-lactam antibiotics, which consists in a hydrolytic cleavage of the β-lactam ring. The method determines the resistance of the bacteria a few hours after a suitable substrate, either a β-lactam antibiotic or a customized β-lactam derivative, has been added to a suspension of the microbes, by direct mass spectrometric measurement of the substrate breakdown caused by the β-lactamases.
