731 results about "Optical rotation" patented technology

Optical rotation or optical activity (sometimes referred to as rotary polarization) is the rotation of the orientation of the plane of polarization about the optical axis of linearly polarized light as it travels through certain materials. Optical activity occurs only in chiral materials, those lacking microscopic mirror symmetry. Unlike other sources of birefringence which alter a beam's state of polarization, optical activity can be observed in fluids. This can include gases or solutions of chiral molecules such as sugars, molecules with helical secondary structure such as some proteins, and also chiral liquid crystals. It can also be observed in chiral solids such as certain crystals with a rotation between adjacent crystal planes (such as quartz) or metamaterials. Rotation of light's plane of polarization may also occur through the Faraday effect which involves a static magnetic field, however this is a distinct phenomenon that is not usually classified under "optical activity."

A second optical rotation layer is between the image plane of the liquid crystal display and a second surface of the transparent plate, and optically rotates the plane of polarization of the display light by about 45.degree. and allows S-polarized light to emanate toward the transparent plate at Brewster's angle. The S-polarized light is reflected on the second surface and is directed toward an eye of an operator.

The passive phase modulator for the optical fiber gyroscope comprises two polarization maintaining optical fiber collimators, two Faraday optical rotation devices with opposite rotation directions and a quarter-wave plate; at one end of the phase modulator, polarized light is input in a manner of forming an included angle of 45 degrees with a principal axis of the wave plate, and the polarized direction of the polarized light rotates to be the same with the direction of a fast axis of the wave plate through the polarization maintaining optical fiber collimators and the two Faraday optical rotation devices, then the polarized light enters the other Faraday optical rotation device through the wave plate, and the polarized direction of the polarized light rotates back to be consistent with the incident direction, and finally, the polarized light leaves the phase modulator through the other polarization maintaining optical fiber collimator. In the process, the polarized light diffuses through the fast axis of the wave plate. Similarly, because the optical rotation processes are opposite, the polarized light passing through the phase modulator from the other end diffuses through the slow axis so as to generate a stationary phase difference. In an interference-type optical fiber gyroscope, the passive phase modulator replaces a traditional piezoelectric phase modulator or an integrated optical block modulator, can improve the accuracy and the reliability, and can reduce the cost.
