The invention relates to a preparation method and an application of a gold nanocluster with adjustable fluorescence and size. The method adopts mercaptosilane commonly used in the industry as a stabilizer and a reductant, and prepares the gold nanocluster in a way of chloroauric acid photochemical reduction. The method is quick, effective and simple in preparation program, no extra reductant is added, and no reaction produces in a multi-phase environment. Catalytic three dimensional aerogels having mesoporous nanoarchitecture

Gold-titania (Au—TiO2) composite aerogels and ambigles were synthesized, characterized, and tested as ambient temperature catalysts for carbon monoxide. Adding alkanethiolate-monolayers-protected gold clusters (with ˜2 nm Au cores) directly to titania sol before gelation yields uniformly dispersed guests in the composite aerogel. The Au guests aggregate to 5 to 10 nm upon calcination to remove alkanethiolate and crystallize amorphous titania to anatase. The resulting composite aerogel exhibits high catalytic activity toward CO oxidation at room temperature at Au particle sizes that are essentially inactive in prior Au—TiO2 catalysts. Transmission electron microscopy illustrates the three-dimensional nature of the catalytic nanoarchitecture in which gold guests contact multiple anatase nanocrystallites.

Aurochloric acid is adopted as a gold source, poly(vinyl alcohol) is adopted as a protective agent, sodium borohydride is adopted as a reductant, and a direct reduction process is adopted to prepare a gold nanoparticle material. Aurochloric acid hydrate is hydrolyzed in water to form free Au<3+>. A series of gold clusters and gold nanoparticles having different dimensions and uniform particle sizes can be obtained through adjusting the concentration of Au<3+> and a mole ratio of the Au<3+> to the reductant. A carrier can be directly loaded with obtained gold colloid through a colloid process. The catalysts can be used for researches for understanding base mechanism of gold nanometer catalysts, and can be applied in simple catalytic reactions.
