Methods for transferring a useful layer of silicon carbide to a receiving substrate

Methods for transferring a useful layer of silicon carbide to a receiving substrate are described. In an embodiment, the invention relates to a method for recycling of a silicon carbide source substrate by removal of the excess zone followed by a finishing step to prepare the source substrate for recycling and reuse. Preferably, the excess zone is removed by a thermal budget where the temperature and time of such treatment causes exfoliation of the excess zone. The finishing step is performed in a manner to provide the desired surface roughness for the substrate so that it can be recycled for re-use. The technique includes implanting at least H+ ions through a front face of a source substrate of silicon carbide with an implantation energy E greater than or equal to 95 keV and an implantation dose D chosen to form an optimal weakened zone near a mean implantation depth, the optimal weakened zone defining the useful layer and a remainder portion of the source substrate. The method also includes bonding the front face of the source substrate to a contact face of the receiving substrate, and detaching the useful layer from the remainder portion of the source substrate along the weakened zone while minimizing or avoiding forming an excess zone of silicon carbide material at the periphery of the useful layer that was not transferred to the receiving substrate during detachment.

Circuit for Rendering Energy Storage Devices Parallelable

A circuit for rendering an energy storage device parallelable comprised of an energy storage device connected to a power adapter that converts the potential of the energy storage device into a potential that follows a predetermined function of the state of charge of the energy storage device. When multiple assemblies are paralleled, they may be charged and discharged as a whole with individual storage devices maintaining equal states of charge. The energy storage devices can be batteries with different cell counts, configurations, and energy discharge profiles. In some cases, the power adapters are comprised of DC to DC converters and system controllers that are used to translate each battery's energy discharge profile into a user-determined energy discharge profile that is a predictable function of the battery's state of charge and independent of temperature or other external conditions.

Composite structural panel with thermoplastic foam core and natural fibers, and method and apparatus for producing the same

A composite structural panel includes a cover sheet laminated onto a three-layered substrate including a thermoplastic foam core sandwiched between two composite outer layers. Each composite outer layer includes natural fibers embedded in a thermoplastic matrix. The thermoplastic material of all layers is preferably polypropylene, and the core consists of an expanded cellular polypropylene rigid foam. In a method for forming the composite structural panel, a first preheated outer layer is laminated and molded onto the foam core in a first molding step, and then the second preheated outer layer and the cover sheet are laminated and molded onto the foam core in a second molding step, with a cooling-down time allowed between the two molding steps. In this manner, each preheated outer layer provides enough heat to thermally fuse the outer layer onto the foam core, without overheating the foam core to the point of softening or melting the foam core. The low density foam core provides a spacing distance between the strong composite outer layers, and therefore the finished composite structural panel has a high strength and rigidity, and a high strength-to-weight ratio. The structural panel can be molded into any desired three-dimensional contoured configuration during the molding process.

Carousel for incubation station

An incubation station has a carousel for receiving a plurality of test sample cards. An even temperature and air flow distribution inside the carousel and incubation of the cards over time at the proper temperature was found to be critically dependent upon air flow characteristics within the incubation station. To optimize air flow, the carousel was given an open rear side that is exposed to an air distribution table having a cover plate placed adjacent to the rear surface of the carousel. The cover plate has a plurality of elongate slots positioned in a symmetrical ring-shaped pattern in registry with the carousel. The elongate slots are positioned at an angle relative to the slots in the carousel such that each carousel slot receives air from more than one slot. An extra fan was also added to the system to increase the flow of air into the air table. Scallop features on the carousel walls also promote even distribution of air flow over the cards. The carousel may be divided into a plurality of carousel segments to increase ease of removal and insertion of the carousel into the incubation station and manufacturability of the carousel.
