Systems for treatment of nasal tissue

Systems for the treatment of nasal tissue, particularly the nasal turbinates, are described. One method for reducing the size of the inferior nasal turbinate is to apply ultrasound energy to the tissue regions beneath the surface of the turbinate tissue. One instrument may be used to deliver ultrasound energy and provide an infusion or injection of a fluid directly into the turbinate being treated, e.g., to bulk up the size of the turbinate to ensure that the ultrasound energy is properly delivered directly into the intended turbinate tissue. Fluids containing anesthetics, fluids infused with analgesics, etc. may be used for pain management while other medications, such as non-steroidal drugs, steroidal drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-histamines, anti-bacterial drugs, etc., can also be used. Such assemblies can also be utilized with other instruments as a system. For example, such a probe can be used with nasal speculums or imaging instrument in treating tissue.

Convection oven with forced airflow circulation zones

At least two blowers are controlled with baffles to create circulating zones of airflow which circulate in a substantially horizontal plane within a convection oven cavity. This airflow minimizes the potential for airflow paths to be broken up or blocked by the configuration of objects placed in the oven. The substantially horizontal airflow reduces the non-uniformity of air temperature distribution within the oven cavity. The blowers may be controlled to rotate either simultaneously or alternately, depending on the selected mode of operation. The blowers and associated heating elements are controlled to operate in various cooking modes by the controller in response to a mode selector input.

Carousel for incubation station

An incubation station has a carousel for receiving a plurality of test sample cards. An even temperature and air flow distribution inside the carousel and incubation of the cards over time at the proper temperature was found to be critically dependent upon air flow characteristics within the incubation station. To optimize air flow, the carousel was given an open rear side that is exposed to an air distribution table having a cover plate placed adjacent to the rear surface of the carousel. The cover plate has a plurality of elongate slots positioned in a symmetrical ring-shaped pattern in registry with the carousel. The elongate slots are positioned at an angle relative to the slots in the carousel such that each carousel slot receives air from more than one slot. An extra fan was also added to the system to increase the flow of air into the air table. Scallop features on the carousel walls also promote even distribution of air flow over the cards. The carousel may be divided into a plurality of carousel segments to increase ease of removal and insertion of the carousel into the incubation station and manufacturability of the carousel.

Zinc air battery and its uses

The invention is a method for increasing the airflow to a zinc-air battery such that the energy density is 500 mwh / cc to 1000 mwh / cc. This allows 8 to 16 hours use as a primary (throw-away) battery, with, for example, high-duty cycle, high-drain cochlear implants, and neuromuscular stimulators for nerves, muscles, and both nerves and muscles together. The systems incorporating the high energy density source are also part of the invention, as well as the resulting apparatus of the method. The uses of this inexpensive, i.e., a $1.00 per day, throw-away primary battery are new uses of the modified zinc-air battery and are directed toward helping people hear again, walk again, and regain body functionality which they have otherwise lost permanently.

Gaseous fuel burner

An ejector, such as a venturi, facilitates the delivery of gaseous fuel to the combustion chamber of a burner. A blower forces air through the ejector, and the air flow produces a suction that draws fuel from a fuel inlet to produce a fuel-air mixture. The amount of fuel drawn from the fuel inlet is a function of the air flow such that a substantially constant fuel-air ratio is obtained over a range of air flow rates and temperatures without the need for a separate high-pressure fuel pump. The fuel-air mixture may be provided to a combustion chamber for combustion. Air from the blower may be pre-heated prior to entering the ejector, for example, using a heat exchanger that recovers some of the heat from the combusted fuel-air mixture. Air flow through the ejector may be conditioned, for example, by a swirler, to produce a tangential air flow that can increase fuel flow by increasing air velocity across the fuel inlet and / or produce a swirl-stabilized flame in the combustion chamber. The combusted fuel-air mixture may be provided to a thermal load, such as an external combustion engine. Blower speed may be controlled manually or automatically to control power output. Fuel flow to the ejector can be controlled manually or automatically to control fuel-air ratio. The burner can be configured to operate with multiple fuel types, for example, using a fuel selector with fixed or variable restrictors.
