Digital image sensor with improved color reproduction

An image sensor includes a sensor array including a two-dimensional array of pixel elements. The array of pixel elements includes a first group of photodetectors having a first sensitivity level and a second group of photodetectors having a second sensitivity level. The sensor array outputs digital signals as pixel data representing an image of a scene. In operation, the first group of photodetectors generates the output signals after a first exposure time and the second group of photodetectors generates the output signals after a second exposure time, where the first exposure time and the second exposure time are within a snapshot of the scene and the first exposure time is different than the second exposure time. When thus operated, the image sensor of the present invention provides improved color reproduction capability and improved signal to noise ratio, especially for the less sensitive photosensitive elements.

Audio Localization Using Audio Signal Encoding and Recognition

A positioning network comprises an array of signal sources that transmit signals with unique characteristics that are detectable in signals captured through a sensor on a mobile device, such as a microphone of a mobile phone handset. Through signal processing of the captured signal, the positioning system distinguishes these characteristics to identify distinct sources and their corresponding coordinates. A position calculator takes these coordinates together with other attributes derived from the received signals from distinct sources, such as time of arrival or signal strength, to calculate coordinates of the mobile device. A layered protocol is used to introduce distinguishing characteristics in the source signals. This approach enables the use of low cost components to integrate a positioning network on equipment used for other functions, such as audio playback equipment at shopping malls and other venues where location based services are desired.

Methods and Apparatuses for Noninvasive Determinations of Analytes

The present invention provides methods and apparatuses for accurate noninvasive determination of tissue properties. Some embodiments of the present invention comprise an optical sampler having an illumination subsystem, adapted to communicate light having a first polarization to a tissue surface; a collection subsystem, adapted to collect light having a second polarization communicated from the tissue after interaction with the tissue; wherein the first polarization is different from the second polarization. The difference in the polarizations can discourage collection of light specularly reflected from the tissue surface, and can encourage preferential collection of light that has interacted with a desired depth of penetration or path length distribution in the tissue. The different polarizations can, as examples, be linear polarizations with an angle between, or elliptical polarizations of different handedness.

High throughput multi-antigen microfluidic fluorescence immunoassays

The development of a high-throughput multi-antigen microfluidic fluorescence immunoassay system is illustrated in a 100-chamber PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) chip which performs up to 5 tests for each of 10 samples. Specificity of detection is demonstrated and calibration curves produced for C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), ferritin, and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). The measurements show sensitivity at and below levels that are significant in current clinical laboratory practice (with SIN>8 at as low as 10 pM antigen concentration). The chip uses 100 nL per sample for all four tests and provides an improved instrument for use in scientific research and “point-of-care” testing in medicine.

Coded integration of a self-capacitance array

Coded integration of a self-capacitance array to improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of self-capacitance measurements is disclosed. A composite measurement of the self-capacitance of a plurality of electrodes can be measured for a plurality of integration periods. The composite measurements can include weighted contributions of charge from the plurality of electrodes, the weighting corresponding to a code. In some examples, the weighted contribution can include positive contributions integrated by a first integrator circuit and negative contributions integrated by a second integrator circuit. The composite measurements of the self-capacitance for the plurality of integration periods can be decoded to extract the self-capacitance measurement for the electrodes. The SNR for the self-capacitance measurements can therefore be improved by increasing the number of samples during the total integration period without requiring dedicated sensing circuitry for the electrodes.

Systems and methods for compact space-time stereo three-dimensional depth sensing

A pattern projection system includes a coherent light source, a repositionable DOE disposed to receive coherent light from said coherent light source and disposed to output at least one pattern of projectable light onto a scene to be imaged by an (x,y) two-dimensional optical acquisition system. Coherent light speckle artifacts in the projected pattern are reduced by rapidly controllably repositioning the DOE or the entire pattern projection system. Different projectable patterns are selected from a set of M patterns that are related to each other by a translation and / or rotation operation in two-dimensional cosine space. A resultant (x,y,z) depth map has improved quality and robustness due to projection of the selected patterns. Three-dimensional (x,y,z) depth data obtained from two-dimensional imaged data including despeckling is higher quality data than if projected patterns without despeckling were used.

Steerable antenna and receiver interface for terrestrial broadcast

Antennas with steerable antenna patterns and techniques for using such antennas are described. In accordance with the invention, antenna patterns with one or more NULLs are used. Through the use of digital control signals the antenna pattern is steered so that a source of signal interference, e.g., a multipath signal, will be located in a NULL. In this manner the received signal's S / N ratio can be maximized thereby facilitating demodulation. The techniques of the invention can be applied to television, computer devices, mobile devices and a wide range of other systems. Digital commands to control an antenna may include multiple information fields, e.g., a direction field, a channel field, a gain field and a polarity field. Antennas incapable of supporting the specified fields disregard information in fields which are not supported. Information in each supported field is decoded and used to adjust the corresponding antenna characteristic.

Ultra-low field nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging to discriminate and identify materials

An ultra-low magnetic field NMR system can non-invasively examine containers. Database matching techniques can then identify hazardous materials within the containers. Ultra-low field NMR systems are ideal for this purpose because they do not require large powerful magnets and because they can examine materials enclosed in conductive shells such as lead shells. The NMR examination technique can be combined with ultra-low field NMR imaging, where an NMR image is obtained and analyzed to identify target volumes. Spatial sensitivity encoding can also be used to identify target volumes. After the target volumes are identified the NMR measurement technique can be used to identify their contents.
