Active Ankle Foot Orthosis

An Active Ankle Foot Orthosis (AAFO) is provided where the impedance of an orthotic joint is modulated throughout the walking cycle to treat ankle foot gait pathology, such as drop foot gait. During controlled plantar flexion, a biomimetic torsional spring control is applied where orthotic joint stiffness is actively adjusted to minimize forefoot collisions with the ground. Throughout late stance, joint impedance is minimized so as not to impede powered plantar flexion movements, and during the swing phase, a torsional spring-damper (PD) control lifts the foot to provide toe clearance. To assess the clinical effects of variable-impedance control, kinetic and kinematic gait data were collected on two drop foot participants wearing the AAFO. It has been found that actively adjusting joint impedance reduces the occurrence of slap foot, allows greater powered plantar flexion, and provides for less kinematic difference during swing when compared to normals.

Synthetic turf

The present invention provides new types of synthetic turf. The synthetic turf includes a pile fabric having a backing (1) and tufts (2) projecting therefrom. In one embodiment, at least a number of the tufts are made of a composite yarn formed by at least one fibrillated yarn (6) together with a number of individual filament yarns (7), in particular with so-called monofilament or monotape yarns. The fibrillated yarn and the individual filament yarns are preferably made of polyethylene so that the synthetic turf is sliding-friendly. In another embodiment, at least a number of the tufts are made of a composite yarn formed by monotape yarns twisted together with a number of the monofilament yarns. The monofilament and monotape yarns are preferably made of polyethylene so that the synthetic turf is sliding-friendly. The combination of a fibrillated yarn and individual filament yarns or the combination of monofilament and monotape yarns in a composite yarn allows immediate achievement of the look of natural grass, that is, without post-fibrillation, and avoids any visible difference in wear pattern between the different types of yarns. In another embodiment, the invention also provides improved particulate material for use as infill material for top-dressing a synthetic turf.

Efficient search for a gray-level pattern in an image

The present invention is directed to a system for finding a transformation of a gray-level pattern in an image. The system recursively searches a transformation space in a multi-resolution manner. At each resolution, the transformation space is divided into groups of transformations. For each group, pixels in the pattern are compared to neighborhoods of pixels in the image in order to identify whether a specific pattern pixel is within the minimum and maximum values of a neighborhood of pixels.

Battery pack with thermal distribution configuration

A plurality of cells (1a to 1j) are abutted against each other and electrically connected on the short sides of rectangular battery housings (2), and binding plates (14, 14) disposed on both long sides are tied together with binding bands (13) to integrally link the cells (1a to 1j). Because the heat radiation conditions are equalized among the cells (1a to 1j), there is an extremely small temperature differential between the cells, charging efficiency, which varies with temperature conditions, is consistent, and there is no variance in battery capacity, so none of the cells are over-discharged, and battery life is extended.

Baseline compensating method and camera used in millimeter wave imaging

Scene-independent baseline signals in output value signals from radiometer or receiver channels used in millimeter wave imaging are eliminated or reduced and an improved image is composed. The scene-independent baseline signals are believed to result from a standing wave which is established between an antenna of the channel and a movable scanning element which scans radiant energy from the scene into each channel. The movable scanning element introduces changes in geometry which change the characteristics of the baseline signals depending upon the position of the movable scanning element. The baseline signals are measured by viewing a scene of uniform brightness temperature, and the baseline signal contribution is subtracted from the output value signals from each channel. The baseline compensated output signals are used to compose an image with better contrast.

A radio frequency power supply structure and a plasma CVD device comprising the same are provided in which reflection of radio frequency power at a connecting portion where an RF cable connects to an electrode is reduced so that incidence of the radio frequency power into the electrode increases. In the radio frequency power supply structure for use in a device generating plasma by charging a plate-like electrode with a radio frequency power, the radio frequency power supply structure supplying the electrode with the radio frequency power from an RF cable, the RF cable is positioned on an extended plane of a plane formed by the electrode to connect to the electrode at a connecting portion provided on an end peripheral portion of the electrode. The RF cable connects to the electrode substantially in the same plane as the plane formed by the electrode. Voltage acting after the connecting portion becomes symmetric relative to the plane formed by the electrode and the electric line of force also becomes symmetric. Thereby, change of impedance at the connecting portion is reduced, reflection of the radio frequency power at the connecting portion is reduced, incidence of the radio frequency power into the electrode increases and the efficiency of film forming and surface treatment is enhanced.

Image sensor and image-capturing apparatus

The capacitance of a charge-accumulating layer of an imaging pixel is made different from that of a charge-accumulating layer of a focusing pixel, thereby reducing the difference in saturation capacitance due to the difference between the light-reception efficiencies of the imaging pixel and the focusing pixel. The ratio between the capacitance of the charge-accumulating layer of the imaging pixel and that of the charge-accumulating layer of the focusing pixel is determined in consideration of a variation in ratio between the light-reception efficiencies of the imaging pixel and the focusing pixel with a change in at least one of the exit pupil distance and the aperture value.

Method for engine misfire detection in multi-cylinder internal combustion engines with multi-cylinder spark ignition

The invention relates to a method for detecting combustion misfires in multi-cylinder internal combustion engines having several simultaneously igniting cylinders wherein, for each crankshaft rotation, rough running values are determined by measuring segment times, the segment times including the times, which correspond to the piston movement of individual cylinders after their ignition time point, wherein the crankshaft passes through an associated circular segment angular region. A combustion misfire is determined in the affected crankshaft circular segment regions from the determined rough running values LUT for crankshaft segment regions having several simultaneously igniting cylinders via a desired value comparison to a threshold value SW2, which is lower in value than the threshold value SW1 for the misfire check in crankshaft segment regions having individually igniting cylinders. For a combustion misfire in a crankshaft segment region having simultaneously igniting cylinders causing a misfire operation in one of these cylinders, a misfire operation is caused by a suitable engine intervention and by measuring the change of the rough running values in the crankshaft segment region having the simultaneously igniting cylinders, the cylinder is determined by the engine intervention which exhibits a combustion misfire without engine intervention.
