Systems for and methods of three dimensional viewing

The present invention relates in general to systems for and methods of three-dimensional viewing of displays and projections. One embodiment two layers (50, 90) are uniform polarizing filters and a birefringent layer with individually switchable elements (60) is sandwiched between them. Together these layers (50, 60, 90) constitute a parallax layer (40). This parallax layer (40) is located at a certain distance from a display (10). This placement, and the existence of opaque areas on the parallax layer (40) which permits to a viewer see a three-dimensional image. The individual elements (601–615) of the birefringent layer (60) are controlled by a control element (80), which is in communication with a head-tracking sensor (85). This allows the individual elements (601–615) of the birefringent layer (60) to be selectively turned on and off according to the position of the viewer's head.

System and method for recognizing word patterns based on a virtual keyboard layout

A system augments stylus keyboarding with shorthand gesturing. The system defines a shorthand symbol for each word according to its movement pattern on an optimized stylus keyboard. The system recognizes word patterns by identifying an input as a stroke, and then matching the stroke to a stored list of word patterns. The system then generates and displays the matched word to the user.

Active ankle foot orthosis

An Active Ankle Foot Orthosis (AAFO) is provided where the impedance of an orthotic joint is modulated throughout the walking cycle to treat ankle foot gait pathology, such as drop foot gait. During controlled plantar flexion, a biomimetic torsional spring control is applied where orthotic joint stiffness is actively adjusted to minimize forefoot collisions with the ground. Throughout late stance, joint impedance is minimized so as not to impede powered plantar flexion movements, and during the swing phase, a torsional spring-damper (PD) control lifts the foot to provide toe clearance. To assess the clinical effects of variable-impedance control, kinetic and kinematic gait data were collected on two drop foot participants wearing the AAFO. It has been found that actively adjusting joint impedance reduces the occurrence of slap foot, allows greater powered plantar flexion, and provides for less kinematic difference during swing when compared to normals.

Touch panel and input device using the same

A touch panel includes multiple belt-like upper conductive layers and lower conductive layers formed in an orthogonal direction to the upper conductive layers. Those two kinds of layers are formed on a light transmissible substrate. A strong adhesion layer and a weak adhesion layer are layered together on a top face or an underside of the light transmissible substrate. The presence of the weak adhesion layer allows peeling off the touch panel from a cover of an apparatus fairly easier when the touch panel needs to be retrofitted to the cover. Since the weak adhesion layer is peeled off together with the strong adhesion layer, it will not be transferred or attached onto the cover. No time or labor is thus needed for removing the layer transferred or attached to the cover. The touch panel capable of being retrofitted with ease is thus obtainable.

System and method for imposing thermal gradients on thin walled test objects and components

A test facility provides high temperature, high pressure and high mass flow fluid to a test object to form a relatively large thermal gradient on the object. Energy in the fluid is recuperated to drive system components, such as a heat exchanger and a turbocharger compressor. A test chamber housing the test object can be arranged to conform to a contour of the test object. A control system permits independent variation of pressure, temperature, cooling fluid and fluid velocity, as well as mechanical loading on the test object. Noncontact, optical inspection measurement techniques can be employed to measure test chamber and / or test object parameters. The test object can be configured to direct cooling airflow to permit various temperature or pressure gradients to be implemented. The test facility is relatively inexpensive to operate and provides a significant cost advantage over testing conducted in a full gas turbine engine.

True 3D cone-beam imaging method and apparatus

A three-dimensional image of an object scanned with a plurality of cone-beam projections from a number of source positions is reconstructed using a method wherein intermediate transform functions are obtained from two-dimensional images of radiation attenuation in the scanned object. The intermediate transform functions are then filtered over a set of parallel planes using a moving-frame technique. The second-order radial derivative of the Radon transform can then be backprojected to generate an intermediate, locally-reconstructed, three-dimensional image. After repetition of this process, the plurality of intermediate, locally reconstructed, three-dimensional images are summed to obtain an ultimate, reconstructed, three-dimensional image of the object. In particular embodiments, the source and detector are displaced along helical paths and radiation scans of the object are taken at multiple positions along the paths.
