Providing services for an information processing system using an audio interface

A method and system for providing efficient menu services for an information processing system that uses a telephone or other form of audio user interface. In one embodiment, the menu services provide effective support for novice users by providing a full listing of available keywords and rotating house advertisements which inform novice users of potential features and information. For experienced users, cues are rendered so that at any time the user can say a desired keyword to invoke the corresponding application. The menu is flat to facilitate its usage. Full keyword listings are rendered after the user is given a brief cue to say a keyword. Service messages rotate words and word prosody. When listening to receive information from the user, after the user has been cued, soft background music or other audible signals are rendered to inform the user that a response may now be spoken to the service. Other embodiments determine default cities, on which to report information, based on characteristics of the caller or based on cities that were previously selected by the caller. Other embodiments provide speech concatenation processes that have co-articulation and real-time subject-matter-based word selection which generate human sounding speech. Other embodiments reduce the occurrences of falsely triggered barge-ins during content delivery by only allowing interruption for certain special words. Other embodiments offer special services and modes for calls having voice recognition trouble. The special services are entered after predetermined criterion have been met by the call. Other embodiments provide special mechanisms for automatically recovering the address of a caller.

Internet-based customer referral system

An Internet-based customer referral system enables individuals and other business entities (“associates”) to refer customers to a merchant's web site in return for compensation, such as commissions on resulting sales. Entities initially register with the merchant web site as associates, and are provided with instructions for creating links to the merchant web site. An associate may, for example, set up an associate web site (or other information dissemination system) with reviews, recommendations, and / or editorials of specific products in the merchant's online catalog, together with links to associated pages in the catalog. When a user follows such a link and then makes a purchase (as tracked by the merchant web site), the system preferably awards a commission to the associate. The system also preferably generates feedback reports that provide each associate with data regarding the effectiveness of each link provided by that associate.

Internet-based customer referral system

An Internet-based customer referral system enables individuals and other business entities (“associates”) to market products sold on a merchant web site in return for commissions. Following registration, the associate sets up a web site (or other information dissemination system) to distribute hypertextual catalog documents that include marketing information (product reviews, recommendations, etc.) about selected products of the merchant. In association with each such product, the catalog document includes a hypertextual “referral link” that allows a user / customer to access the merchant web site and purchase the product. When a customer selects a referral link, the customer's computer transmits unique IDs of the selected product and of the associate to the merchant's site, allowing the merchant to identify the product and the referring associate. If the customer subsequently purchases a product from the merchant's site, a commission is automatically credited to an account of the referring associate.

Soi transistor having a reduced body potential and a method of forming the same

By introducing a atomic species, such as carbon, fluorine and the like, into the drain and source regions, as well as in the body region, the junction leakage of SOI transistors may be significantly increased, thereby providing an enhanced leakage path for accumulated minority charge carriers. Consequently, fluctuations of the body potential may be significantly reduced, thereby improving the overall performance of advanced SOI devices. In particular embodiments, the mechanism may be selectively applied to threshold voltage sensitive device areas, such as static RAM areas.

Use of Beacons for Assistance to Users in Interacting with their Environments

Beacon-based guidance functionality is described herein that assists the user in navigating over a desired route within an environment, or otherwise interacting with the environment. The environment, in turn, is populated with a plurality of beacons having, in one implementation, respective non-overlapping ranges. The desired route traverses ranges associated with a route-specific set of beacons, from among the plurality of beacons. In one manner of operation, the beacon-based guidance functionality determines whether a user is within a range of one of the route-specific beacons. Based on that knowledge, the beacon-based guidance module can generate guidance information which directs the user towards a next waypoint in the route.

Generating access point beacons at different power levels

An access point generates beacons at different power levels at different times to provide an acceptable tradeoff between coverage area associated with the beacons and outage experienced at nearby access terminals. For example, a femto access point may transmit beacons at a relatively low power for a relatively long period of time to reduce interference at nearby access terminals that are being served by a macro access point. The femto access point may then transmit beacons at a relatively high power for a relatively short period of time to enable nearby access terminals to receive the beacons. Also, a given transmit chain may be used to provide frequency hopping of high and low power beacons.

Multiplex communication with slotted retransmission on demand

A method for communication in a sequence of frames includes assigning a respective time slot to each of a plurality of mobile units, while reserving an unassigned time slot. During a first frame, one of the mobile units transmits an uplink signal in the respective time slot, carrying first uplink data over the air to a base station. The base station transmits a downlink signal to the mobile unit indicating that retransmission of the first uplink data is required. Responsively to the downlink signal, during a second frame subsequent to the first frame, the mobile unit transmits the uplink signal both in the respective time slot and in the reserved time slot so as to carry the first uplink data and second uplink data over the air to the base station. A similar method may be used for downlink retransmission.

Domain manager and domain device

A domain manager device for managing a network. The manager issues to a new device joining the network a number of symmetric authentication keys, and preferably a number of authentication tickets. Each respective authentication key allows the new device to communicate securely with one respective other device comprised in the network. Each respective authentication ticket allows a device with a first identifier to authenticate itself to a device with a second identifier. The new device receives those authentication tickets whose first identifier matches its identifier. The new device presents the ticket with second identifier ‘B’ to device ‘B’ to authenticate itself to ‘B’. Preferably the domain manager generates a number of master device keys and issues one to the new device. Then the authentication tickets can be encrypted with the master device key issued to device with the second identifier.

Low Latency Multicast for Infiniband Host Channel Adapters

A low latency multicasting receive and send apparatus and method comprising low latency receive and send queues. In an InfiniBand® network each destination group of nodes (recipients) is identified by a unique Global ID (GID)+Local ID (LID). Each node whose ports are part of a multicast group identify themselves via a LID which identifies participating ports. When a switch receives such a multicast packet with a multicast LID in the packet's DLID field it replicates the packet to each of the designated ports. Each destination adapter at a receiving node receives the multicast packet and distributes copies of the packet to QPs in the host system that are registered for the multicast address.

Data storage system and method for monitoring and controlling the power budget in a drive enclosure housing data storage devices

A control processor manages the power budget in a drive enclosure and is within the drive enclosure which monitors in real time a redundantly configured power supply unit, drives, interposers, and temperature sensors, and determines the power settings for each drive to avoid overload and overheating in the system. The control processor dynamically adjusts the mode of operation as needed during operation through the SAS interposer. A localized monitoring and control mechanism eliminates the need for extraneous coordination of information across various entities that access the storage. Data tunneling takes place directly between the compute nodes and target drives through the SAS expander and interposer, and does not need buffering the pending IO requests in the DRAM.
