Activation and remote modification of wireless services in a packet network context

A third generation (3G) mobile communication system supports an over-the-air activation scheme utilizing a wireless packet data protocol. A subscriber identity module (SIM) is preloaded with temporary operating parameters such as a temporary international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) that is used for initial access to a network. Once a packet data protocol communication link is established between the mobile device and a network support node, the user may remotely subscribe to a number of service terms using the mobile device. In addition, an activation procedure is carried out to assign permanent operating parameters, e.g., a permanent IMSI, to the SIM. After activation, the user can remotely modify existing terms or remotely enroll in additional service features via a wireless IP link between the mobile device and a network support node.

Compensation of propagation delays of wireless signals

System(s) and method(s) for compensation of propagation delay offsets of wireless signals. Compensation is accomplished through determination of an effective wireless signal propagation delay that accounts for signal path delay and propagation delay over the air. Such determination is based at least in part on statistical analysis of accurate location estimates of reference positions throughout a coverage sector or cell, and location estimates of the reference positions generated through time-of-flight (TOF) measurements of wireless signals. Determination of propagation or signal path delay offset also is attained iteratively based at least in part on reference location estimates and TOF location estimates. High-accuracy location estimates such as those obtained through global navigation satellite systems are employed as reference location estimates. Position of probes or wireless beacons, deployed throughout a sector or cell, also are employed as reference locations. Compensation of propagation delay offset improves accuracy of conventional TOF location estimates and radio network performance.

Traffic management in distributed wireless networks

Wireless networks and devices are ubiquitous today. For service providers to offer customers QoS and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) means in part providing resilient connectivity of wireless devices with good signal strength, good Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SNIR), and adequate useable bandwidth. Doing so requires that devices transmitting and receiving packets use over-the-air bandwidth efficiently and manage over-the-air congestion. According to embodiments of the invention QoS measurements and controls are incorporated only in the network (i.e. APs or controllers) and therefore QoS and SLAs can be achieved with all deployed client stations versus standards based approaches that require additional capabilities in network nodes, client stations and in most cases modifications to the applications. SLAs can be provided exploiting embodiments of the invention for traffic prioritization, capacity improvements through load distribution, and adjacent channel interference mitigation discretely or in combination with standards based mechanisms.

Trusted modular firmware update using digital certificate

An over-the-air firmware update is accomplished in a secure manner using a two-step process. The first step uses an initial boot using a fixed boot program and an authenticated and verified secondary environment to complete starting of only authenticated code. After verifying a pending update, the second step is started with the electronic device being booted into an update mode with an update loader that has exclusive access to a signing key. A dummy update image is loaded into a temporary memory location and a hash is taken. A digital certificate is created corresponding to the update image and signed using the signing key. The update and digital certificate are atomically installed and the signing key is deactivated. Upon reboot, the new image is used for operation and is verified by the hash data and public key in the digital certificate.

Method and apparatus for cellular communication over data networks

Cellular signals or other wireless signals / messages are introduced into a building or to an outside location by transmitting packets corresponding to those signals over a data network and low cost cables to designated locations within the data network. Once the designated packets containing the signals reach the destination, they are then broadcast over the air to a terminal capable of receiving the wireless message. In a first embodiment, an in-building gigabit Ethernet network, such as that currently existing presently in many buildings, is used to distribute radio signals indoors. Instead of transmitting the radio signals over the air from a repeater connected to a base station, coded baseband signals generated by the coding processor (e.g., a CDMA Modem Unit) in the base station are packetized and sent over the Ethernet network to radio processing equipment and antennas distributed throughout the building. The radio processing equipment strips the packet headers from the baseband signal packets so those signals can be broadcast via the antennas to one or more mobile terminals. Additionally, hard handoff is employable upon entering a building using specifically configured pilot signals.
