Ambulatory medical apparatus and method using a telemetry system with predefined reception listening

An implanted medical device (e.g. infusion pump) and an external device communicate with one another via telemetry messages that are receivable only during windows or listening periods. Each listening period is open for a prescribed period of time and is spaced from successive listening periods by an interval. The prescribed period of time is typically kept small to minimize power consumption. To increase likelihood of successful communication, the window may be forced to an open state, by use of an attention signal, in anticipation of an incoming message. To further minimize power consumption, it is desirable to minimize use of extended attention signals, which is accomplished by the transmitter maintaining an estimate of listening period start times and attempting to send messages only during listening periods. In the communication device, the estimate is updated as a result of information obtained with the reception of each message from the medical device.

Coding method and apparatus for multiple channels of audio information representing three-dimensional sound fields

In an encoder, multiple channels of audio information representing multidimensional sound fields are split into subband signals and the subband signals in one or more subbands are combined to form composite signals. The composite signals, the subband signals not combined into a composite signal and information describing the spectral levels of subband signals combined into composite signals are assembled into an encoded output signal. The spectral level information conveys either the amplitude or power of the combined subband signals or the apparent direction of the sound field represented by the combined subband signals. In digital implementations, adaptive bit allocation may be used to reduce the informational requirements of the encoded signal.

Method and apparatus for installation abstraction in a secure content delivery system

A system for secure delivery of on-demand content over broadband access networks includes a client application executing on a user's local computer system. The client application interacts with a content server on which a plurality of selectable titles are stored and further interacts with an access server which provides the network address of a title and keying data necessary for to the client process access and execute the title. The client process utilizes an installation abstraction which enables a title to be executed on the local computer system without ever being installed. The abstraction is achieved by mounting a network file system and storing a set of registry entries related to the title on the local computer system. Portions of the title are retrieved from the content server and executed by the local operating system. During title execution, requests from the local operating system are intercepted and redirected to the set of registry entries, as applicable. The times at which the client process may retrieve the title data from the content server are defined by the access server through use of an activator and token.

Client installation and execution system for streamed applications

A client installation and execution system for streamed applications requires the user or administrator to obtain a subscription to the streamed application program from a subscription server before installation of the streamed application program begins. The client then obtains an encrypted access token for the streamed application program from a license server upon acknowledgment of a valid license, receives an installation information block from the server, and installs the proper icons, aliases, and description onto the client that give the user the proper look and feel of the original application program. A file spoofer is installed on the client that redirects file accesses from the client's local file system to the streaming server's file system. A registry spoofer is provided on the client for intercepting all registry calls on the client and redirecting calls that manipulate certain registries to an alternate path specified in a registry database on the client. An application page cache is also provided on the client that is managed by a cache manager that requests application pages of the streamed application program from the server. During execution of the streamed application program, page requests are generated and the cache manager requests any application pages from the server that are not resident in the application page cache and places the requested application pages in the application page cache.

Conventionally coded application conversion system for streamed delivery and execution

A conventionally coded application conversion system for streamed delivery and execution converts locally installable applications into a data set suitable for streaming over a network. The invention monitors two classes of information during an application installation on a local computer system. System registry modifications are monitored and the modification data are recorded when the installation program writes to the registry of the local computer system. File modification data are logged each time an installation program modifies a file on the system. This data is used to create an initialization data set which is the first set of data to be streamed from the server to the client and contains the information captured needed by the client to prepare the client machine for streaming a particular application. A runtime data set is also created that contains the rest of the data that is streamed to the client once the client machine is initialized for a particular application. A versioning table contains a list of root file numbers and version numbers which are used to track application patches and upgrades. The invention monitors a running application that is being configured for a particular working environment on the local computer system. The data acquired are used to duplicate the same configuration on multiple client machines.

Software update method, apparatus and system

A system for remotely updating software on at least one electronic device connected to a network. The electronic devices have a non-volatile rewritable storage unit divided into at least two partitions, one of which will contain core firmware and the other of which will contain auxiliary software. When an update is received at the device, the updated core firmware is written to overwrite the partition in the rewritable storage unit that contained the auxiliary software. When this is completed and verified, the previous version of the core firmware stored in the storage unit is disabled from execution by the device. Next, the updated auxiliary software is written to overwrite the old version of the core firmware. When this write is complete, the device determines a suitable time for it to be rebooted to execute the updated software. In another embodiment, the present core firmware in the device is copied from the partition it is in to the other partition, overwriting the auxiliary software stored there. The new core firmware received to update the device is overwritten into the first partition, the old copied core firmware being present in case of an upgrade failure, and upon a successful update of the first partition, the auxiliary software is written to the second partition, overwriting the copied old core firmware. In this manner, the position of the core firmware and auxiliary software within the partitions is preserved during normal operation of the device.

An client-side performance optimization system for streamed applications provides several approaches for fulfilling client-side application code and data file requests for streamed applications. A streaming file system or file driver is installed on the client system that receives and fulfills application code and data requests from a persistent cache or the streaming application server. The client or the server can initiate the prefetching of application code and data to improve interactive application performance. A client-to-client communication mechanism allows local application customization to travel from one client machine to another without involving server communication. Applications are patched or upgraded via a change in the root directory for that application. The client can be notified of application upgrades by the server which can be marked as mandatory, in which case the client will force the application to be upgraded. The server broadcasts an application program's code and data and any client that is interested in that particular application program stores the broadcasted code and data for later use.

Self-healing hierarchical network management system, and methods and apparatus therefor

A hierarchical network management system (NMS) in which a plurality of NMS managers, each responsible for different portions or aggregations of a communications network, are logically arranged in a tree structure. The NMS managers are further organized into various sub-groups. The NMS managers within each sub-group monitor the status of one another in order to detect when one of them is no longer operational. If this happens, the remaining operational NMS managers of the sub-group collectively elect one of them to assume the responsibility of the non-operational NMS manager. The NMS is thus "self-healing" in the sense that one NMS manager can dynamically, without operator intervention, assume the responsibilities for another NMS manager.
