Methods and apparatus for implementing virtualization of storage within a storage area network

Methods and apparatus for implementing storage virtualization on a network device of a storage area network are disclosed. A frame or packet is received at a port of the network device. It is then determined that the frame or packet pertains to access of a virtual storage location of a virtual storage unit representing one or more physical storage locations on one or more physical storage units of the storage area network. A virtual-physical mapping between the one or more physical storage locations and the virtual storage location is then obtained. A new or modified frame or packet is then sent to an initiator or a target specified by the virtual-physical mapping.

Enhanced data switching/routing for multi-regional IP over fiber network

Wide-area data communications utilize regional networks transporting IP-over-Ethernet on fiber. For certain Layer 2 services, a regional implementation of the network makes limited use of spanning tree protocol on a backbone ring. Learning bridge operations in switches on associated access rings involve a short default for an aging timer. For use of Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), the connection of each access ring to the backbone ring uses a pair of routers with dual links therebetween. One of these links is bonded to the backbone (OSPF Area 0), whereas the other link is bonded to the Area of the respective access ring. Also, certain routers within each regional network form a mini-autonomous system, for boundary gateway protocol (BGP). The mini-autonomous systems of the regional networks form a confederation. The network utilizes route reflectors in the mini-autonomous systems. The Internet carries confederation commands to and from a designated hub.

Method and architecture for optical networking between server and storage area networks

A method and system for routing high-speed data to and from SANs (Storage Area Networks and Server Area Networks) via optical burst-switched (OBS) networks. OBS network components, including edge nodes and switching nodes, are coupled between SAN islands. In one embodiment, the OBS network comprises a photonic burst-switched (PBS) network. Under one scheme, a PBS edge node and SAN gateway are co-located at the interface to the SAN, while a plurality of PBS switching nodes are deployed between the PBS edge nodes. Under another scheme, PBS switching / edge nodes are co-located at respective SANs. This scheme employs an external gateway protocol (EGP) for routing data via selected route segments. Data going to and received from a SAN is packaged as Fibre Channel Frames. Data transmitted via the PBS network is converted into PBS frames having encapsulated Fibre Channel Frames. Can bus edge timing control apparatus, systems and methods

Structures and methods herein insert one or more parallel “recessive nulling” driver impedances across a controller area network (CAN) bus starting at the time of a dominant-to-recessive data bit transition and extending for a selected recessive nulling time period. Doing so increases a rate of decay of a CAN bus dominant-to-recessive differential signal waveform, permits a shortened recessive bit time period, and allows for increased CAN bus bandwidth. Various modes of operation are applicable to various CAN bus node topologies. Recessive nulling may be applied to only the beginning portion of a recessive bit following a dominant bit (“LRN mode”) or to the entire recessive bit time (“HRN mode”). And, some embodiments may apply LRN operations to some recessive CAN frame bits and HRN operations to others.

Time-division multiplexed link for use in a service area network

A data transmission system uses a method of aligning a plurality of transmission lanes with a plurality of reception lanes in a time-division multiplexing arrangement. The method utilizes a plurality of control symbols and lane identifiers that are transmitted on each of the transmission lanes during link initialization and training. The control symbols and lane identifiers are time-division multiplexed onto a data link and subsequently demultiplexed onto the plurality of reception lanes. One of the reception lanes is monitored for receipt of a control symbol followed by a lane identifier. Upon receipt, a lane identifier is compared to the identity of the reception lane being monitored. If the received lane identifier does not match the identity of the reception lane being monitored, the assignment of the reception lanes is rotated.
