A method and system to produce biodiesel from a combination of corn (maize) and other agro feedstock may be simarouba, mahua, rice, pongamia etc. Germ is separated (either by wet process or dry process) from corn, crude corn oil extracted from germ and corn starch milk / slurry is heated and cooked in jet cooker to about 105 degree Celsius, enzymes added to convert starch into fermentable sugars in liquification and saccharification process and rapidly cooled down to about 30 degree Celsius. Simarouba fruits syrup, mahua syrup is mixed with corn starch milk (after saccharification). When yeast is added the fermentation takes place for about 72 hours. Thereafter the fermented wash is distilled to produce ethanol. Water consumed in dry process is very less compared to traditional wet process system. Corn oil and mixture of other oils is fed into transesterification (reaction) vessels where ethanol with catalyst, usually sodium hydroxide is added and reaction takes place for about a period of 2-8 hours. Crude biodiesel and crude glycerin as by-products is produced. Excess ethanol removed by distillation process. Crude biodiesel washed with warm water to remove residual soaps or unused catalyst, dried and biodiesel stored for commercial use. Oil extracted from spent bleach mud (used sodium bentonite), a waste product of edible oil refineries may also be utilized for economical production of biodiesel in combination of corn oil and ethanol.

Vehicle air-conditioning system with heat exchanger having integrated electric heaters and temperature control system

A vehicle air-conditioning system includes electric heating devices to accelerate a rise in temperature of air for heating a passenger compartment by accelerating a rise in temperature of warm water used to heat the air and by directly heating the air. Electric heating devices are built into a heat exchanger for heating so that the devices can release heat into surrounding air through radiating fins. When the system is in a heating operation region and the temperature of warm water available to flow through the heat exchanger is below a set temperature T2, the electric heating devices are turned on. A blower for blowing heating air into a passenger compartment through the heat exchanger is stopped, and a warm water valve is opened to allow the warm water to flow through the heat exchanger, whereupon heat from the electric heating devices is released through the radiating fins into the warm water inside the heat exchanger. When the temperature of the warm water rises above the set temperature T2, the blower is started, and heat from the electric heating devices is released through the radiating fins into the air blown by the blower.

Process for recovering rubber from rubber-bearing plants with a gristmill

A process of recovering rubber from rubber-bearing plant materials in non-aqueous conditions by first drying the rubber-bearing plant material and then mechanically grinding the rubber-bearing plant material to produce rubber threads and finely ground root tissue. Following the mechanical grinding, rubber threads are separated from finely ground plant root tissue by passing the ground plant material over a dry vibrating mesh screen and blowing away the plant root skins to leave rubber threads. The rubber threads may further be purified by stirring the rubber threads in warm water. Then the mixture is settled and the rubber threads are skimmed off. Optimal purification may be obtained by stirring, settling, and skimming off the rubber threads. Another optimal purification can be achieved by stirring continuously in the flowing warm water.

Hygro materials for use in making yarns and fabrics

A process is described wherein pile yarn is woven with cotton weft and warp yarns to produce terry fabrics, such as towels. The fabric is then washed in warm water to dissolve the PVA fibers. The amount of fibers dissolved, depends upon the count of the yarn or yarns used. By dissolving the PVA fibers, a hollow air space is produced throughout the pile yarn, corresponding to an increase in the air space in the pile yarn. By increasing the air space in the pile yarn, the resulting towels are softer and bulkier than standard cotton towels. The present invention further relates to pile yarn in terry woven fabric (warp yarn), or weft yarn, in the case of flat fabrics.

Heat Transfer Methods for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion and Desalination

A means is provided to produce fresh water from seawater on both the boiler side and the condenser side of an OTEC power plant. Part of the warm ocean surface water is evaporated, and its vapor transfers heat to the working-fluid boiler as the vapor condenses. The condensation of the vapor provides fresh water. On the condenser side, the condensation of the working-fluid vapor from the turbine in the condenser releases heat that evaporates seawater that runs down the outside of the condenser surfaces. The vapor from the seawater is condensed by a heat exchanger that uses input from colder seawater. As the cold seawater accepts heat from the condensing vapor, it becomes slightly warmer and provides the source of seawater that accepts heat from the condenser. The condensing vapor on the heat exchanger becomes fresh water that is drawn out as potable water. To provide additional fresh water, a multi-stage desalination unit uses the warm water discharge and the cold-water discharge from the OTEC plant to provide a temperature gradient that causes evaporation and condensation in each stage of the unit.

Gas Hydrate Harvesting

A harvester (10) with warm water spray jets (11) that fluidizes and releases gas hydrates from seafloor sand and soil. The released gas hydrates float into the harvester (10) and are then transferred through a hydrate slurry pipe (14) to a separation vessel (18). Dissociation of the gas hydrates into methane gas occurs in the separation vessel (18) from its lower pressure than the seafloor and the optional use of heat. The liberated methane gas flows upward in a gas vent pipe (27) to a topside vessel (30) for storage from the pressure of the submerged separation vessel (18). Alternatively, the vent pipe can be fed directly into an available natural gas pipeline. Crude oil collected in the separation vessel (18) can be separated and pumped to a topside vessel (30) for storage and use in a refinery. No other processing is required to produce commercial quality natural gas harvested directly from gas hydrates on or near the seafloor.

High-efficiency cooling pads, mattresses, and sleeves

Cooling pads, mattresses, and limb-comforming sleeves reduce a person's temperature by evaporative and / or conducting cooling. An open cell foam pad defines an internal air flow passages proceeding according to serpentine or other desired routing. The pad is wetted, and a blower circulates air through the air flow passage and evaporatively cools the pad by removing warm water vapor. By contacting the cooled structure, the person is conductively cooled. The pad also employs evaporative cooling if water is permitted to seep from the foam pad onto the person's skin and subsequently evaporate. Another cooling device is a multi-layer evaporative cooling mattress. The mattress comprises an open cell foam structure having a person-receiving side and a base side. At the person-receiving side lies an absorbent layer with internal liquid delivery lines, and optionally having an outer film applied thereto. Beneath the absorbent layer is an air manifold comprising air flow passages defined in a cushion layer, or an open mesh layer interposed between the absorbent layer and the cushion layer. Another cooling device is a thermal cooling sleeve, with a series of multiple elongated, parallel ridges. Pairs of adjacent ridges are separated by intervening channels, and each ridge has a lateral liquid passage through it. When the first and last ridges are brought around to meet each other, the ridges form a continuous sleeve. Within the sleeve's body, the passages cooperatively define a continuous conduit proceeding from ridge to ridge inside the sleeve.
