Delivery system for medical devices

The invention is directed to a delivery system for implantation a self-expanding medical device in a body which includes a control handle and a catheter portion. The catheter portion includes an outer restraining member which covers the collapsed, medical device, an inner catheter member having a distal end including a region upon which the medical device is mounted, and an outer sheath which is removably attached to the control handle. The outer sheath creates a conduit for the catheter portion to prevent the inner catheter member from moving axially when the outer restraining member is retracted. The control handle has a rotatable thumbwheel to actuate a retraction mechanism attached to the proximal end of the outer restraining member which moves the restraining member in a proximal direction to deploy the medical device.

Systems and methods for treating a thrombus in a blood vessel

Systems and methods for treating an occluding thrombus in a blood vessel of a patient. Ferrofluids having magnetic particles dispersed therein are introduced locally via a catheter, a micro-catheter, or intravenously, to the bloodstream of a patient. The ferrofluids are magnetically manipulated or moved throughout the blood vessels of the patient by an external magnetic field generator until the intended occluding thrombus is broken up and removed. The external magnetic field generator, which can be stationary or portable, creates a vortex, high velocity jets, or other motion, within the ferrofluids, by rotating or moving at least one magnet relative to the patient. The at least one magnet is provided in the magnetic field generator. The vortex, high velocity jets, or other motion of the ferrofluids are used to break-up and remove the occluding thrombus. Drugs or abrasive particles, or both, may be incorporated with the ferrofluids and delivered to the bloodstream with the ferrofluids to help break-up and remove the occluding thrombus as well. Upon removal of the thrombus, magnetic components of the ferrofluids may remain in the patient or may be magnetically recaptured and removed from the bloodstream.

Photochromic and electrochromic compounds and methods of synthesizing and using same

This invention relates to novel photochromic and electrochromic monomers and polymers based on 1,2-dithienylcyclopentene derivatives and method of using and synthesizing same. The compounds are reversibly interconvertible between different isomeric forms under suitable photochromic or electrochromic conditions. The electrochromic conversion may be catalytic. The application also relates to ultra-high density homopolymers prepared using ring-opening methathesis polymerization (ROMP) where the central ring of the 1,2-bis(3-thienyl)-cyclopentene is incorporated directly into the polymer backbone. The monomer units may be readily functionalized to enable the synthesis of polymers with diverse structural and electronic properties. The compounds have many potential applications including high-density optical information storage systems, photoregulated molecular switches, reversible holographic systems, ophthalmic lenses, actinometry and molecular sensors, photochromic inks, paints and fibers and optoelectronic systems such as optical waveguides, Bragg reflectors and dielectric mirrors.

Automatic clutch with manual override control mechanism

An automatic clutch for automotive and other applications employs a control rod to manually control engagement and disengagement of the clutch independently of its speed of rotation, and in one form of invention can be employed in manual start motorcycles to engage the clutch for bumpstarting purposes before the engine is up to speed, and in an alternate form a control rod can be employed in electrically started bikes to lock the clutch against engagement whether or not the engine is up to the speed required for automatic engagement of the clutch. The control rod may either extend through the transmission shaft from one end of the clutch housing or may extend through the opposite end of the clutch housing, and in certain applications the hereinbefore described control rods can be combined to selectively control bumpstarting to manually effect clutch engagement or as a locking mechanism to prevent clutch engagement.
