1253 results about "Extinction" patented technology

In biology, extinction is the termination of a kind of organism or of a group of kinds (taxon), usually a species. The moment of extinction is generally considered to be the death of the last individual of the species, although the capacity to breed and recover may have been lost before this point. Because a species' potential range may be very large, determining this moment is difficult, and is usually done retrospectively. This difficulty leads to phenomena such as Lazarus taxa, where a species presumed extinct abruptly "reappears" (typically in the fossil record) after a period of apparent absence.

Compensation of human variability in pulse oximetry

The invention relates to a method of calibrating a pulse oximeter, in which the effects caused by tissue of a subject can be taken into account. A detector output signal is measured when living tissue of the subject is present between emitters and the detector in a sensor. Nominal calibration and nominal calibration characteristics are read from a memory, whereupon values for the same nominal characteristics for the sensor on living tissue of the subject are established using the detector output signal. Then, changes in the nominal calibration characteristics induced by the living tissue are calculated and a subject-specific calibration is formed by correcting the nominal calibration with the changes. Finally, the hemoglobin fractions are solved using the corrected nominal calibration. The invention also relates to a pulse oximeter having pre-stored data in a memory comprising data of initial characterization measurements, data of nominal characteristics describing calibration conditions under which a predetermined calibration of the apparatus has been applied, and data of nominal calibration and nominal calibration characteristics. An extinction coefficient compensation block is operatively connected to the first signal processing means and to the memory for reading data, said block comprising first calculation means adapted to correct the nominal characteristics of the sensor on living tissue of the subject. A transformation compensation block is operatively connected to the first signal processing means for receiving the DC signals and to the memory for reading data, said block comprising second calculation means adapted to correct the transformation values based on the changes in the DC signals induced by tissue of the subject. Alternatively, said data may be stored in the sensor part of the pulse oximeter.

Fabrication of microstructured optical fibre

Microstructured optical fibre is fabricated using extrusion. The main design of optical fibre has a core suspended in an outer wall by a plurality of struts. A specially designed extruder die is used which comprises a central feed channel, flow diversion channels arranged to divert material radially outwards into a welding chamber formed within the die, a core forming conduit arranged to receive material by direct onward passage from the central feed channel, and a nozzle having an outer part in flow communication with the welding chamber and an inner part in flow communication with the core forming conduit, to respectively define an outer wall and core of the preform. With this design a relatively thick outer wall can be combined with thin struts (to ensure extinction of the optical mode field) and a core of any desired diameter or other thickness dimension in the case of non-circular cores. As well as glass, the extrusion process is suitable for use with polymers. The microstructured optical fibre is considered to have many potential device applications, in particular for non-linear devices, lasers and amplifiers.

Dynamic Terahertz Switch Using Periodic Corrugated Structures

A subwavelength terahertz (THz) switch using an artificially designed conductor metamaterial is discussed in this invention. Theoretically, slow-light EM wave propagating at THz speed imitates the strongly localized surface plasmon modes and henceforth is called Spoof Surface Plasmon Polariton (SSPP) mode in this invention. The SSPP mode of slow-light EM propagation can be easily tailored by changing the refractive index of the dielectric materials inside the metallic gap structure engineered as a periodic array of grooves. Thus, the incorporation of electro-optical material which has birefringence such as a nematic liquid crystal (N-LC) or multiple-refractive indices into the metallic gap leads to a highly compact and efficient terahertz switch being controlled by a low-voltage signal. The optimal design of the SSPP switch enabled by this novel method shows many interesting properties including 1) strong subwavelength localization; 2) relatively high extinction (On / Off switching) ratio; and 3) small damping attenuation. The THz dynamic switches can be used to construct linear switches, Y junction switches and Mach-Zehnder interferometers by using micromachining and other fabrication techniques.

Modified Pulse Oximetry Technique For Measurement Of Oxygen Saturation In Arterial And Venous Blood

A method for the measurement of oxygen saturation in arterial blood SaO2 by means of pulse oximetry without calibration is described. Photoplethysmography (PPG) is measured in three wavelengths in the infrared and for each PPG curve the relative change in light transmission is obtained. Two equations, each relating SaO2 to the ratio of the relative changes in light transmission for two wavelengths, using the values of the extinction coefficients of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin for the three wavelengths, enable the determination of SaO2, assuming linear dependence of the optical path-length on the wavelength, for the three wavelengths in the infrared. Similar technique for the determination of oxygen saturation in venous blood from changes in light transmission due to changes in venous blood volume is suggested
