A vertical take-off and landing vehicle comprised of a fuselage having a front, a rear, and two lateral sides and a set of four thrusters set to the front, the left, the right, and the rear of said fuselage. The thrusters are either independently powered thrusters or could utilize a single power source. The thrusters, which are ducted fan units capable of providing a vertically upward force to the aircraft, are provided with such redundancy that the aircraft can hover with up to two thrusters inoperative. The thrusters are comprised of a set of two counter rotating propellers both of which creates lift. The two counter rotating propellers cancel out the torque effect normally created by using only one propeller. The Ducted fan units being movable between a first position in which they provide vertical lift and a second position in which they provide horizontal thrust using a set of servos and gears.

Band type multicontact electrode and method of making the same

A multicontact electrode array suitable for implantation in living tissue includes a distal end having multiple spaced-apart ring or band electrode contacts carried on a flexible tube carrier. Each ring electrode contact is laser welded to a respective wire tip that has a multi-helix orientation on the inside of a separation tube. The center of the multi-helix wire defines a lumen wherein a positioning stylet, or other suitable positioning tool, may be removably inserted when the electrode array is implanted. The method of making the multicontact electrode array includes, as an initial step, winding lead wires around a suitable mandrel so as to form a multi-helix configuration. (Alternatively, the wire may be purchased in a multiwire pre-wound configuration that defines a lumen, in which case the mandrel is slipped inside the lumen.) Then, at a distal end of the electrode, each wire within the multi-helix winding is unwound so as to protrude out from the winding. Next, a non-conductive separation silicone tube which has a longitudinal slit along its length, is placed around the wound wires. Ring contacts are then placed over the silicone tube at a distal end of the electrode array and spaced apart as desired. These ring contacts also have a slit therein through which the protruding wire ends may exit. The silicone tube is used as a spacer to centrally locate the multi-helix wound wires with the ring contacts. A compressive die may be used to hold the pre-assembled ring contact, multi-helix wire, separation tube in their desired positions, and may be used to close the opening or slit of each ring contact through which the wire tips protrude. The wire tips are then individually trimmed to a suitable distance. A laser welding process may then be used to bond each lead wire to a corresponding ring contact. Finally, the preassembled electrode array is placed in a molding die, and a polymer filler is injected into the internal gaps of the electrode array components.

Hybrid time-frequency domain equalization over broadband multi-input multi-output channels

A system and methodology for channel equalization are provided. According to one aspect, a receiver structure for a MIMO system is provided that employs frequency domain equalization (FDE) with noise prediction (FDE-NP). The FDE-NP structure may include a feedforward linear frequency domain equalizer and a group of time domain noise predictors (NPs), which may operate by predicting a distortion corresponding to a given linearly equalized data stream based on previous distortions of all linearly equalized data streams. According to another aspect, a receiver structure for a MIMO system is provided that employs FDE-NP with successive interference cancellation (FDE-NP-SIC), which can extend the functionality of FDE-NP by ordering all linearly equalized data streams according to their minimum mean square errors (MMSEs) and detecting those streams which have a low MMSE first, thereby allowing current decisions of lower-indexed streams to be considered along with previous decisions for all data streams for noise prediction. According to a third aspect, a method for analyzing the performance of a MIMO system with equalization is provided. Pursuant to the method, a general expression of MMSE may first be derived. The MMSE expression may then be related to an error bound by applying the modified Chernoff bounding methodology in a general MIMO system. The parameters in the result may then be varied for applicability to single-input single-output (SISO), multiple-input single-output (MISO), and single-input multiple-output (SIMO) systems with receiver equalization technology.

A method and apparatus for tactile cueing of aircraft controls (21) is disclosed. The apparatus of the present invention warns pilots of approaching limits on certain aircraft performance parameters. The most common warnings are for rotor speed exceeding a moving limit. The present invention uses tactile cueing through the collective stick (21). Tactile cueing means that the pilot does not need to scan the intruments to ascertain proximity to the aforementioned limits. Instead, the pilot can operate the aircraft within proper limits by touch, while maintaining situational awareness outside of the cockpit (20). The method and apparatus of the present invention provides customary friction resistance up to a limit position that is continuously updated. According to the present invention, continued motion of the collective (21) in a direction beyond that limit position results in a breakout force and an increasing resistive force.
