A system, apparatus and method of processing and / or removing radioactive materials from a body of water that utilizes the buoyancy of the water itself to minimize the load experienced by a crane and / or other lifting equipment. In one aspect, the invention is a method comprising: a) submerging a container having a top, a bottom, and a cavity in a body of water having a surface level, the cavity filling with water; b) positioning radioactive material within the cavity of the submerged container; c) raising the submerged container until the top of the containment apparatus is above the surface level of the body of water while a major portion of the container remains below the surface level of the body of water; and d) removing bulk water from the cavity while the top of the container remains above the surface level of the body of water and a portion of the container remains submerged. The bulk water can be added back into the cavity to add neutron shielding after the container is placed in a staging area and prior to personnel performing the desired operations to the container. As a result, gamma radiation and neutron shielding of the container can be maximized for any crane capacity.

System and method for promoting growth of multiple root systems in a hydroponic environment

This invention provides a container and associated growing process that promotes the growth of at least two different, specialized types of roots and that provides the optimal conditions for these two types of roots. In particular, the container defines an upper section that promotes growth of a fine intricate web of roots that is surrounded by an organic, non-organic or mixed organic and non-organic nutrient-rich medium. This upper section is separated by a permeable medium divider that allows predetermined quantities of water to pass into the upper section (to maintain desired moisture in the nutrient medium (soil), while a lower / bottom section contains a reservoir of hydroponic water that may be relatively free of any nutrients (e.g. “non-nutrient” water). Extending from the upper root ball are a series of water-drinking straw-like roots that transpire water directly from the non-nutrient reservoir and that are continually exposed to massive amounts of atmospheric oxygen. A transport (capillary) device allows water to wick from the reservoir into the upper section to maintain a desired level of moisture in the upper roots, and carrying with it additional dissolved oxygen via evaporation and transpiration. The bottom section can be filled with an acceptable porous, water-storing medium such as gravel or rock wool. The permeable medium divider can include one or more capillary devices that allow transfer of water from the lower reservoir into the upper section. In certain embodiments, the divider can include a series of formations that allow it to sit in an elevated manner on a water-containing structure (such as a sponge-like medium).

A method of humidifying gases to 100% relative humidity and a humidifier to carry out such a method are provided to humidify gases for fuel cells and for other applications. The humidification of gases is thermally controlled and thermal energy is managed to provide an efficient system. A pre-humidifier accommodates a wide range of flow rates of dry gas to initially humidify and pre-heat the gas, and a boiler provides steam to mix with the effluent from the pre-humidifier to humidify the gas to saturation. A thermal insulator between the boiler and bulk water and / or pre-humidifier enhances the steam generation from the boiler and prevents direct heating of water or gases by heat from the boiler. Above the boiler, bulk water, and pre-humidifier, a mixing chamber further functions as a condenser and water separator. The mixing chamber provides a space for mixing gases and steam and separates saturated gases from condensed water. By vapor condensation during the mixing, the gas can be humidified completely to its dew point at given temperature and pressure conditions.

Wave-driven oscillations result in periodic upward ejections of portions of the water inside the tube that can be collected in a reservoir that is at least partially positioned above the mean water level of the body of water, or pressurized by compressed air or gas, or both. Water within such a reservoir may return to the body of water via a turbine, thereby generating electrical power (making the device a wave engine), or else the device's pumping action can be used for other purposes such as water circulation, propulsion, or cloud seeding.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the method comprises dissolving the components in water within ±4° C. of Tmin; forming the thermoreversible hydrogel; and filtering the thermoreversible hydrogel at Tmin. The final sterilization can be obtained by filtering under aseptic conditions or by autoclaving or irradiation of the final product. In other embodiments, the components of the gel are dissolved in a sufficiently large quantity of water that reduces the gel viscosity or precludes formation of a thermoreversible hydrogel, and sufficient water is then removed under vacuum to produce the final thermoreversible hydrogel.

Under distillation conditions, including a bottoms temperature of greater than about 55° C. and less than about 75° C., an overhead or side-cut distillate stream containing a purified propylene oxide is obtained with low yield loss of propylene oxide to propylene glycols and other glycol heavies. The purified propylene oxide can be further purified in a finishing distillation to obtain propylene oxide meeting commercial grade purity requirements.

Ph-weighted MRI using fast amine chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) imaging

A pH-weighted chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method and system are provided that works by indirectly measuring the NMR signal from amine protons found on the backbones of amino acids and other metabolites, which resonate at a frequency of +2.8-3.2 ppm with respect to bulk water protons. The technique uses a modified magnetization transfer radiofrequency saturation pulse for the generation of image contrast. A train of three 100 ms Gaussian pulses at high amplitude (6 uT) or Sinc3 pulses are played at a particular frequency off-resonance from bulk water prior to a fast echo planar imaging (EPI) readout, with one full image acquired at each offset frequency. This non-invasive pH-weighted MRI technique does not require exogenous contrast agents and can be used in preclinical investigations and clinical monitoring in patients with malignant glioma, stroke, and other ailments.
