Saturable absorber using a fiber taper embedded in a nanostructure/polymer composite and lasers using the same

A saturable absorber (SA) is constructed using a fiber taper embedded in a carbon nanotube / polymer composite. A fiber taper is made by heating and pulling a small part of standard optical fiber. At the taper's waist light is guided by the glass-air interface, with an evanescent field protruding out of the taper. Carbon nanotubes mixed with an appropriate polymer host material are then wrapped around the fiber taper to interact with the evanescent field. Saturable absorption is possible due to the unique optical properties of the carbon nanotubes. The device can be used in mode-locked lasers where it initiates and stabilizes the pulses circulating around the laser cavity. The SA can be used in various laser cavities, and can enable different pulse evolutions such as solitons, self-similar pulses and dissipative solitons. Other applications include but are not limited to optical switching, pulse cleanup and pulse compression.

Holographic printer

A single method and apparatus for producing many of the most common types of hologram from digital data is disclosed. The data are generated entirely by a computer as a 3-D (animated) model or from multiple 2-D camera images taken of a real 3-D (moving) object or scene from a plurality of different camera positions. The data are digitally processed and displayed on a small high resolution spatial light modulator (SLM). A compact low energy pulsed laser, is used to record composite holograms. The present invention permits the creation of restricted or full parallax master transmission or reflection type composite holograms, known as H1 holograms, that can be copied using traditional methods. Alternatively the same invention and apparatus permits the direct writing of hologram without the need to pass through the intermediate stage of the H1 transmission hologram.

Novel single compound toners for use in polyesters

InactiveUS20030212172A1Low extractionExcellent resultOrganic dyesMixingPolyesterMethods of production
Individual compounds that provide effective toning (or bluing) to combat yellowing within polyester articles (such as bottles, containers, and the like) are provided. Such a novel toner permits effective neutralization of yellowness while also providing highly desirable low haze and increased brightness due to a sharp absorption peak within the needed range of wavelengths (e.g., from about 565 to 590 nm) and a narrow half-height band width. Furthermore, such an individual compound is preferably liquid in nature and may thus be incorporated within an added ultraviolet absorber solution or shelf-stable dispersion to facilitate addition within target polyesters at various stages of production. The particular UV absorbers desired as additives within target polyesters also tend to exhibit certain yellowing effects that require attention as well. The inventive single bluing agent compound thus also accords effective neutralization of such UV absorber yellowing as well. Methods of production and liquid UV absorber / individual bluing agent formulations are also encompassed within this invention.

Bipolar transistor and method for producing the same

InactiveUS20050020023A1External base resistor resultSaving process stepSemiconductor/solid-state device manufacturingSemiconductor devicesPhysicsBipolar junction transistor
A method for producing a bipolar transistor is described, which comprises providing a layer sequence, which comprises a substrate, a first oxide layer and a SOI layer, generating a collector region in the substrate, generating a second oxide layer on the layer sequence, generating a base region in the first oxide layer, such that the base region is in contact with the SOI layer, generating an emitter region on the base region such that the emitter region is isolated from the SOI layer, and generating a collector contact, a base contact and an emitter contact. The present invention is based on the knowledge that the production of a bipolar transistor can be made significantly less expensive when the above layer sequence is used for its production, and thereby, the base region is generated in the BOX layer while the collector region is formed in the substrate. Thereby, otherwise required production process steps and particularly layer deposition steps, such as for a polysilicon or oxide layer, are saved.

Rapid analysis method of lead in gold mud

The invention relates to a rapid analysis method of lead in gold mud. The method comprises the following steps: processing a sample by nitric acid, aqua regia, sulfuric acid, and a mixed acid of nitric acid and sulfuric acid in sequence, after the acid is smoked and evaporated, adding diluted sulfuric acid, boiling to dissolve the salts, adding excess sodium hyposulfite to reduce gold to zero valent and precipitate silver; allowing the system to stand still to carry out aging, filtering, washing the precipitate by diluted sulfuric acid and water; dissolving the precipitate by an acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer solution, filtering, recovering gold and silver, adding a xylenol orange indicator into the filtrate, dropwise adding EDTA until the color of the solution changes from purple-red to light yellow, wherein the color change shows that the titration end point is reached, and finally calculating the lead content. In the provided method, sodium hyposulfite is used to reduce gold and precipitate silver so as to effectively separated gold and silver from lead, thus the interference of gold and silver on the end point is avoided, moreover, the operation is largely simplified, and precise and stable analysis results can be obtained by the provided method.

Method and apparatus for multiphase, fast-locking clock and data recovery

A method and apparatus for clock and data recovery that is advantageous in burst-mode systems is disclosed. This clock and data recovery method allows a) fast locking to a rapidly changed phase of the transmission clock, and b) stable tracking of a slowly changing phase of the transmission clock. Such fast locking minimizes the “guard band” between consecutive transmission bursts, while stable tracking provides reliable data tracking, resulting in the efficient use of bandwidth. A plurality of clock signals, is generated, each having a different phase. The phase of an input signal data stream is determined and a desired clock signal in the plurality that corresponds to the phase of the input data stream is selected and used to sample the input signal data stream.
