Remote magnetic activation of hearing devices

A magnetic switch assembly for hearing devices designed for remote activation by the user is highly miniaturized with a self-contained latching mechanism. The switch is activated and deactivated by the user via a hand-held magnet placed in proximity to the hearing device. The switch assembly includes a miniature reed switch and a miniature latching magnet affixed directly to one of the reeds or the associated lead wire. Direct attachment minimizes the air gap between the latching magnet and a reed thus enabling latching with only an extremely small magnet. The latching magnet produces a magnetic field of adequate strength to hold the reeds together in electrical contact after the air gap between the reeds is closed by the user's placement of the external hand-held magnet in proximity thereto. But the latching magnet's field is of inadequate strength for unaided closure of the air gap between the reeds. Consequently, once the reeds are closed the latching magnet prevents separation thereof until the reeds are exposed to an external magnetic field of opposite polarity and sufficient strength to overcome the field produced by the latching magnet.

The method comprises etching a PZT ferroelectric layer with a high temperature BCl3 etch which provides substantial selectivity with respect to the hard mask. Alternatively, the PZT ferroelectric layer is etch using a low temperature fluorine component etch chemistry such as CHF3 to provide a non-vertical PZT sidewall profile. Such a profile prevents conductive material associated with a subsequent bottom electrode layer etch from depositing on the PZT sidewall, thereby preventing leakage or a “shorting out” of the resulting FeRAM capacitor.

A combustor for a gas turbine includes a main fuel injector for receiving compressor discharge air and mixing the air with fuel for flow to a downstream catalytic section. The main fuel injector includes an array of venturis each having an inlet, a throat and a diffuser. A main fuel supply plenum between forward and aft plates supplies fuel to secondary annular plenums having openings for supplying fuel into the inlets of the venturis upstream of the throats. Each diffuser transitions from a circular cross-section at the throat to multiple discrete angularly related side walls at the diffuser exit. Gaps between circumferentially and radially spaced diffusers at their exits are eliminated. With this arrangement, uniform flow distribution of the fuel / air, velocity and temperature is provided at the catalyst inlet.

The threshold voltage of each transistor is independently controlled by a back bias voltage control circuit so that the input voltage and the output voltage relationship can be made linear without the use of an additional circuit such as a level shifting circuit. Communication systems are described that use geometrically shaped constellations that have increased capacity compared to conventional constellations operating within a similar SNR band. In several embodiments, the geometrically shaped is optimized based upon a capacity measure such as parallel decoding capacity or joint capacity. In many embodiments, a capacity optimized geometrically shaped constellation can be used to replace a conventional constellation as part of a firmware upgrade to transmitters and receivers within a communication system. In a number of embodiments, the geometrically shaped constellation is optimized for an Additive White Gaussian Noise channel or a fading channel. In numerous embodiments, the communication uses adaptive rate encoding and the location of points within the geometrically shaped constellation changes as the code rate changes. One embodiment of the invention includes a transmitter configured to transmit signals to a receiver via a communication channel, wherein the transmitter, includes a coder configured to receive user bits and output encoded bits at an expanded output encoded bit rate, a mapper configured to map encoded bits to symbols in a symbol constellation, a modulator configured to generate a signal for transmission via the communication channel using symbols generated by the mapper. In addition, the receiver includes a demodulator configured to demodulate the received signal via the communication channel, a demapper configured to estimate likelihoods from the demodulated signal, a decoder that is configured to estimate decoded bits from the likelihoods generated by the demapper. Furthermore, the symbol constellation is a capacity optimized geometrically spaced symbol constellation that provides a given capacity at a reduced signal-to-noise ratio compared to a signal constellation that maximizes dmin.
