Dynamic spinal stabilization system

A spinal stabilization system for installation to the posterior of the spinal column that includes a pair of anchoring members affixed to adjacent vertebrae and which may have screw threads to carry out that affixation. The anchoring members each have external head ends for the attachment of a flexible shaft that thus spans between the vertebrae and allows motion between those adjacent vertebrae. The flexible shaft is made of a monolithic body having no moving components that could generate debris and fail mechanically. Exemplary flexible shafts suitable for use in this system includes one having at least one slot that may be a spiral slot, a shaft having pairs of oppositely disposed slots formed in the body with adjacent pairs angularly displaced apart or a flexible shaft having a serpentine slot formed therein. The flexible shaft is controlled to have a desired flexibility.

System and method for interleaving point-of-load regulators

A system and method for providing interleaving point-of-load (POL) regulators such that each regulator's switching cycle is phase displaced with respect to those of other POL regulators in the array is disclosed. As a result, the aggregate input and / or output reflected ripple and noise of the input, output, or both is reduced. Each regulator in the array is associated with an unique address. A serial data-line writes the phase spacing programmed to each addressable POL regulator in the array. The present invention permits phase displacement of POL regulators without limitation to the input and output voltages of each of the regulators in the array. The array of POL regulators may also operate in a phase displaced mode with only a single control line. The need for separate controllers and multiple control lines is thereby eliminated.

Active metal/aqueous electrochemical cells and systems

Alkali (or other active) metal battery and other electrochemical cells incorporating active metal anodes together with aqueous cathode / electrolyte systems. The battery cells have a highly ionically conductive protective membrane adjacent to the alkali metal anode that effectively isolates (de-couples) the alkali metal electrode from solvent, electrolyte processing and / or cathode environments, and at the same time allows ion transport in and out of these environments. Isolation of the anode from other components of a battery cell or other electrochemical cell in this way allows the use of virtually any solvent, electrolyte and / or cathode material in conjunction with the anode. Also, optimization of electrolytes or cathode-side solvent systems may be done without impacting anode stability or performance. In particular, Li / water, Li / air and Li / metal hydride cells, components, configurations and fabrication techniques are provided.

Communication techniques

Aspects provide methods for controlling user equipment operation in a wireless communications network configured to support communication with the user equipment according to a communication mode which utilises repetition of messaging; computer program products and network nodes operable to perform those methods. One method comprises: determining a modulation and coding regime to be used by the user equipment; identifying a repetition regime to be implemented by the user equipment in conjunction with the modulation and coding regime; and communicating an indication of the determined modulation and coding regime and identified repetition regime to the user equipment. Aspects recognise that when implementing a coverage enhanced region within a network it is possible that fixed repetition levels can be defined for CE-MTC UE. Those fixed repetition levels can be implemented by a network and recognise differences between the CE-MTC UE radio condition. That is to say, the number of repetitions used may correspond to radio condition being experienced at a machine-type communication device: those in poorer coverage regions will be selected to receive a greater number of repetitions than those in a better radio coverage region. The granularity of such repetition levels may subject to a given operator's implementation of a coverage enhanced region. The first aspect recognises that it is possible to implement varying repetition levels for user equipment operating in the coverage enhanced region supported by a network access node. Those varying repetition levels can be configured at the network access node; for example, an eNodeB.

Robot hand and control system, control method and control program for the same

A robot hand has a pipe which is sufficiently flexible to allow a change in the cross-sectional area thereof according to the pressure of a fluid, thereby permitting a higher degree of freedom of the layouts of the pipe and a master cylinder connected through the pipe. Moreover, considerations are given to a change in the cross-sectional area of the pipe caused by a change in the pressure of the fluid in the pipe, thus making it possible to measure the position of a slave piston with high accuracy.
