Apparatus and method of optimizing power system efficiency using a power loss model

A power subsystem is actively optimized to improve total subsystem efficiency in a way that is responsive to changes in load requirements, power supply variations, and subsystem temperature variations. Detailed, multidimensional power loss models are developed for constituent devices which are then combined into a power subsystem containing a controller and circuity for measuring device operating parameters such as input and output voltage, output current, and temperature. Operating parameters are continually monitored, and set points are correspondingly changed based on the detailed power loss models to achieve maximum overall efficiency for the instantaneous operating state of the system.

Multiple-Output DC-DC Converter

The invention relates to a DC / DC converter design. The converter requires only one single inductor to draw energy from one input source and distribute it to more than one outputs, employing Flexible-Order Power-Distributive Control (FOPDC). It include a single inductor, a number of power switches, comparators, only one error amplifier, a detecting circuit and a control block to regulate outputs. This converter can correctly regulate multiple outputs with fast transient response, low cross regulation, and effective switching frequency for each output. It can work in both discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and continuous conduction mode (CCM). Moreover, with FOPDC, future output extension is simple, making a shorter time-to-market process for next versions of the converter. The design can be applied to different types of DC-DC converter.

Multislice DC-DC converter

A novel monolithic step-down dc-dc buck converter that uses two or more ("n") parallel slices to achieve a high output current with a small filter capacitor is provided. Each of the n slices may be operated with a phase difference of 360° / n. Each of the converter slices may be based on a synchronous rectifier topology to avoid the excessive power losses introduced by the diode component of conventional step-down buck converters. Hysteretic control may be used (with or without pulse-width modulation and pulse-frequency modulation) to provide an internal gate-drive waveform without the need to provide a dedicated clock signal or oscillator circuit. The hysteretic control is further refined using digital control techniques to enforce a brief dead time between the activation of each slice such that undesirable circulating currents are prevented. A significant advantage of the proposed multi-slice step-down dc-dc buck converter and its associated control is that the semiconductor switches, filter inductors and capacitor, and the control circuit may be fabricated as part of a single monolithic integrated circuit.
