CSI based drive having active damping control

A multi-motor drive in which the resonance existing between one or more output filter capacitors of a current source inverter and an a.c. induction motor is reduced. The inverter features a switching pattern generator which controls the power switches of the inverter based on a reference current. A control loop, connected to the switching pattern generator, measures the load current or voltage and generates a nominal reference current based on an error therein; determines a damping current based on the voltage at the terminal; and determines the reference current supplied to the switching pattern generator by subtracting the damping current from the nominal reference current. The invention essentially simulates the use of a physical damping resistor connected in parallel with each output filter capacitor, but without the corresponding energy loss. This form of active damping control is also applied to a resonance mode existing between the input filter capacitors of a PWM-based rectifier and the system inductance of a power source.

Integrated Filter Feedthrough Assemblies Made From Low Temperature Co-Fired (LTCC) Tape

A filter capacitor comprising a substrate of at least one layer of a low temperature co-fires ceramic (LTCC) tape supporting alternating active and ground electrode layers segregated by a dielectric layer is described. The substrate is preferably a laminate of three LTCC tapes pieces that are heated under pressure and at a relatively low temperature to become a laminate that maintains its shape and structure dimensions even after undergoing numerous sintering steps. Consequently, relatively thin active and ground electrode layers along with the intermediate dielectric layer can be laid down or deposited on the LTCC substrate by a screen-printing technique. A second laminate of LTCC tapes is positioned on top of the active / dielectric / ground layers to finish the capacitor. Consequently, a significant amount of space is saved in comparison to a comparably rated capacitor or, a capacitor of a higher rating can be provided in the same size as a conventional prior art capacitor.

Low energy consumption RF telemetry control for an implantable medical device

In an implantable medical device, a frequency synthesizer employed in the RF transceiver of the IMD operating system functions in a PLL LOCK mode wherein the VCO frequency is governed by the PLL and an energy saving HOLD mode wherein the PLL is not operational and the VCO generated carrier frequency can drift over time. The PLL circuit is powered up and coupled with a control voltage input and the output of the VCO to develop a frequency control voltage stored by a capacitive loop filter during initial LOCK portions of both uplink and downlink telemetry transmission time periods. A frequency modulation (FM) input of the VCO receives data bit modulation voltages that modulates the carrier frequency during uplink transmission of patient data. During the HOLD portion of a downlink telemetry transmission, an AFC algorithm is enabled and derives a frequency correction value from the difference in frequency of the constant received carrier frequency and the drifting VCO generated carrier frequency, and the frequency correction value is applied to the VCO FM input to compensate for loop filter capacitor discharge of the control voltage causing the drift. The AFC algorithm derived frequency correction value is stored in memory and is also applied during the HOLD portion of an uplink telemetry transmission to the VCO FM input to compensate for loop filter capacitor discharge of the control voltage causing the drift. In addition, a recharge current is applied to the capacitive loop filter.

Nano-Titanium For Making Medical Implantable Hermetic Feedthrough Assemblies

Ferrules made of nano-titanium for incorporation into feedthrough filter capacitor assemblies are described. The feedthrough filter capacitor assemblies are particularly useful for incorporation into implantable medical devices such as cardiac pacemakers, cardioverter defibrillators, and the like, to decouple and shield internal electronic components of the medical device from undesirable electromagnetic interference (EMI) signals. Nano-titanium experiences significantly less grain growth after high temperature brazing in comparison to commercially pure (CP) titanium and the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. For that reason, nano-titanium is an ideal material for use in implantable medical applications where high strength, structural integrity even after heating and corrosion resistance are desired.
