The lipid peroxide and hydroperoxide substrates for this enzyme are known to be toxic to biological organisms and can generate additional peroxides by chain propagation reactions. In the presence of an allene oxide synthase these compounds are rapidly and effectively converted to allene oxides (the epoxide), thus breaking the chain reaction.
