A first wiggler pulse bunches the electrons and a second wiggler generates light. The first wiggler may be an optical buncher with an injected seed wave, and the second wiggler can be a magnetic wiggler, optical wiggler, resonant transition radiator, parametric radiation radiator, Cerenkov radiation radiator or a Smith-Purcell radiation radiator. Wide wavelength range high efficiency avalanche light detector with negative feedback

A novel use of a solid state light detector with a low impedance substrate is described. Light that enters the substrate after traversing the antireflective layer creates an electron-hole pair. The electrons are collected in a crystalline epitaxial layer that spans the space charge region, or depletion layer. A high electric field accelerates free electrons inside the depletion region. The electrons collide with the lattice to free more holes and electrons resulting from the presence of an n-p junction, or diode. The diode is formed by placing the crystalline layer which has positive doping in close proximity with the electrodes which have negative doping. The continual generation of charge carriers results in avalanche multiplication with a large multiplication coefficient. During the avalanche process, electrons can be collected enabling light detection. A resistive layer is used to quench, or stop, the avalanche process.

The technical scheme disclosed by the invention has the characteristics of compact structure, continuous and adjustable frequency and narrow bandwidth, and is easy to implement technically.

Method of controlling coherent synchroton radiation-driven degradation of beam quality during bunch length compression

A method of avoiding CSR induced beam quality defects in free electron laser operation by a) controlling the rate of compression and b) using a novel means of integrating the compression with the remainder of the transport system: both are accomplished by means of dispersion modulation. A large dispersion is created in the penultimate dipole magnet of the compression region leading to rapid compression; this large dispersion is demagnified and dispersion suppression performed in a final small dipole. As a result, the bunch is short for only a small angular extent of the transport, and the resulting CSR excitation is small.

The invention relates to a double-electron-beam double-grating based terahertz free electron laser source. The laser source comprises two groups of electron guns, metal rectangular gratings and collectors with totally-consistent parameters; the two electron guns are corresponding to the two collectors respectively; one metal rectangular grating is positioned between the corresponding electron gun and the correcting collector on one side while the other metal rectangular grating is positioned between the corresponding electron gun and the correcting collector on the other side; the two metal rectangular gratings are symmetrical; and a variable open resonant cavity is formed by the two metal rectangular gratings. Micro free electron laser (FEL)

A charged particle beam including charged particles (e.g., electrons) is generated from a charged particle source (e.g., a cathode or scanning electron beam). As the beam is projected, it passes between plural alternating electric fields. The attraction of the charged particles to their oppositely charged fields accelerates the charged particles, thereby increasing their velocities in the corresponding (positive or negative) direction. The charged particles therefore follow an oscillating trajectory. When the electric fields are selected to produce oscillating trajectories having the same (or nearly the same) frequency as the emitted radiation, the resulting photons can be made to constructively interfere with each other to produce a coherent radiation source.

Limiter optics for an ignition feedback regenerative free electron laser amplifier have a pickoff mirror direct a portion of the output from the free electron laser through a focusing assembler. Orientation of a phased mirror may be rotated to control spatial separation of parallel beams.

The radiation source comprises an electron gun, a radiator and a solenoid magnet. The electron gun is connected with a vacuum pipeline. The radiator is arranged in the interior of the vacuum pipeline. The solenoid magnet wraps the exterior of the vacuum pipeline. There are different modes from a base mode to a higher mode in the radiator and the different modes correspond to different radiation frequencies. By selecting parameters and electron energy of the radiator, the frequency of the higher mode of the radiator is allowed to be integral multiple of that of the base mode, i.e., the harmonic wave of the base mode frequency. By use of a harmonic wave increasing method in which the frequency of the higher mode of the radiator is integral multiple of that of the base mode, a high-power and high-frequency THz radiation source can be generated by use of an electron beam which less requires parameters and by use of a large-size waveguide.
