Climbing with dry adhesives

ActiveUS7762362B2Facilitate engagement and disengagementSolve the lack of adhesionVehiclesStress distributionMicrometer
A bio-inspired device is provided designed to scale smooth vertical surfaces using anisotropic frictional materials. The device draws its inspiration from geckos and other climbing lizards and employs similar compliance and force control strategies to climb (or hang onto) smooth vertical surfaces including glass, tile and plastic panels. Foremost among the design features embodied in the device are multiple levels of compliance, at length scales ranging from centimeters to micrometers, to allow the device to conform to surfaces and maintain large real areas of contact so that adhesive forces can support it. Structures within the feet ensure even stress distributions over each toe and facilitate engagement and disengagement of the adhesive materials. A force control strategy works in conjunction with the anisotropic adhesive materials to obtain sufficient levels of friction and adhesion for climbing with low attachment and detachment forces.

Method of manufacturing an article having a radio frequency identification (RFID) device

A manufacturing machine assembly for producing an article having a radio frequency identification (RFID) device. The article is fabricated from a continuous sheet of stock with an adhesive layer and a release liner. A printing station prints indicia on the sheet of stock. A cutting station cuts the continuous sheet of stock to form first and second strips. The release liner is removed from the first strip to expose the adhesive layer and an applicator applies a number of the RFID devices to the exposed adhesive layer. Coupling rollers, each having an integral notch, bond the adhesive layer of the first strip with the second strip such that the RFID devices are sandwiched between the first and second strips. Alternatively, the release liner from the second strip may also be removed such that the adhesive layer of the first strip is bonded with the adhesive layer of the second strip to sandwich the RFID devices between the adhesive layers.

Methods for forming and patterning of metallic films

A solvent containing an organic or inorganic metal compound containing a metal catalyst that serves as a plating seed is applied to a plastic substrate and dried, thereby forming a metal compound film, and then, the metal compound film is irradiated with an energy beam, such as an electron beam, to precipitate the metal catalyst. By irradiating a local area of the metal compound film with the energy beam, the chemical reaction of metal catalyst precipitation can be caused locally in the irradiated area, and thus, a patterned metal catalyst film can be formed. Once the substrate is irradiated with the energy beam, the surface may be molten to trap the metal catalyst to an extremely shallow depth, so that the bonding between the substrate and the metal catalyst is enhanced. Thus, the metal catalyst film becomes harder to peel off the substrate.
