Apparatus for beam homogenization and speckle reduction

This invention greatly improves the quality of images obtained using optical systems illuminated by coherent light. It does so by removing the undesirable psuedo-random variations in the final image due to interference speckle and inhomogeneities in the spatial intensity distribution of the light source. A bundle of light-guiding fibers is interposed between the illumination source and the imaging system. Non-uniform propagation within the fiber bundle creates a psuedo-random phase variation across the illumination beam, which gives rise to a dynamic interference speckle pattern superimposed upon the desired image acquired by the optical system. Rotating the fiber bundle around the axis of propagation, whilst simultaneously integrating the output of the photosensitive detector over a period of time, substantially removes variations due to source inhomogeneities and coherent interference.

Method, apparatus and program for image processing

An analyzing means first calculates the blur direction and blur level of a digital photograph image based on edge widths and histograms of the edge widths obtained in each direction, and discriminates whether the image is a blurred image or a normal image. Then, it further calculates the camera shake level and blur width for the image discriminated to be a blurred image. A parameter setting means sets a one-dimensional correction mask and a two-dimensional correction mask based on the blur width. It also sets a correction level based on the blur level. It further makes an adjustment to the ratio between the one-dimensional and two-dimensional correction masks based on the camera shake level.

Method and apparatus for use in encrypted communication

A method and apparatus for secure distribution of cryptographic key information based on quantum cryptography is described. The apparatus incorporates or is used with a transmitter comprising a source of pairs of dim, depolarized light pulses together with a phase modulator and random number generator that are used to encode the pulse pairs with the binary key information by changing the relative phases of the pulses of some pairs. The apparatus incorporates a receiver comprising a polarization beam splitter, and a pair of interferometers and optical detectors. The invention overcomes problems associated with polarization evolution in quantum cryptography systems that incorporate a non-polarization-preserving optical channel (e.g. standard optical fiber). In addition the invention removes the need for an active random number generator and phase modulator at the receiver, because the polarization beam splitter acts as if it were a random router, thereby achieving significant reduction of the cost and complexity of the apparatus.
