Customized interactive voice response menus

A method for providing customized interactive voice response menus can include monitoring user interactions with an interactive voice response system. Data concerning the user interactions can be stored. A request to initiate an interactive voice response session can be received. The interactive voice response system can determine an identity for a user making the request. The interactive voice response system can generate a customized menu for the user. At least a portion of the customized menu can be based upon the usage data. The customized menu can be presented to the user.

DC-balanced and non-DC-balanced drive schemes for liquid crystal devices

A method of operating a liquid crystal cell includes DC-balancing by displaying an inverse image with electric fields of increased magnitude relative to the image producing electric fields. While the inverse image is displayed the image is prevented from being visible by either turning off the light source or re-directing or blocking the light from reaching the viewing area. The image producing electric fields and the inverse image producing electric fields are such that the cumulative time integral of the electric fields that are present in one direction across the liquid crystal material is substantially equal to the cumulative time integral of the electric fields that are present in the opposite direction during the given period of time during the operation of liquid crystal cell. The time duration of the inverse image portion is shorter than the time duration of the image portion by an amount proportional to the increased magnitude of the additional electric fields. Because of the shorter time period when no image is visible, the system brightness is increased.

Cancer stem cell expression patterns and compounds to target cancer stem cells

Described herein are therapeutic targets expressed in cancer stem cells and methods for treating and diagnosing cancer by targeting such cells with antibodies, compounds, nucleic acid, or other therapeutic agent. In one embodiment described herein, therapeutic agents for the treatment of cancer are provided based on the identification of cancer stem cell targets. The present invention also includes therapeutic targets for cancer therapy and cancer stem cell-targeted therapy. The invention includes the treatment of cancer by the administration of compounds or agents that target cancer stem cells.

Biofilm formation to define risk for colon cancer

Methods of identifying subjects at increased risk of cancer, based upon detection of biofilms and / or biofilm-associated microbes within a subject, are disclosed. Therapies designed to prevent formation and / or reduce the size of biofilms in a subject identified to be at increased risk of cancer based upon detection of biofilms and / or biofilm-associated microbes are disclosed. In particular embodiments, the invention provides for identification of a subject at elevated risk of developing or having colorectal cancer and / or a colorectal adenoma, based upon detection of a biofilm and / or biofilm-associated bacteria within the gastrointestinal tract of the subject (optionally, within a biopsy specimen and / or stool sample of such subject). Therapies involving administration of an antibiotic agent and / or a probiotic agent to a subject, to prevent or reduce biofilm formation within the gastrointestinal tract of the subject, optionally provided in combination with additional cancer therapy, are also disclosed.

Signaling of transmission settings in multi-user systems

The present invention relates to a transmitting apparatus, a receiving apparatus, a system, a signal, and a method of multi-user transmission, wherein transmission settings are divided into common signal information, containing settings / information relevant for multiple receivers and user stream specific information, containing settings / information relevant only to a related user stream. Furthermore, the common signal information may comprise at least one of a duration of the longest user stream field and multi-user resource allocation field, so that the receivers know the mapping of user streams to receivers.

Method and System for Management of Operating-Room Resources

A computer-implemented method for managing operating-room resources in a hospital includes the steps of receiving at least one surgery request, identifying the resources required for surgery associated with the surgery request, capturing initial data on availability of the resources, capturing initial patient data, and establishing a pre-scheduled operating-room plan based on an initial optimization, and the further steps of capturing current data on availability of the resources, capturing current patient data and establishing a current operating-room plan based on a current optimization. A computer-based system for managing operating-room resources in a hospital and a modular computer-based system for managing operating-room related processes in a hospital are also disclosed.

System and method for reducing an instantaneous load in an appliance

An appliance having at least one component, a receiver, and a controller. The component is configured to operate in a normal operation mode and a resource savings mode; wherein an instantaneous resource demand of the at least one component is greater during the normal operation mode than during the resource savings mode. The receiver is adapted to receive a curtailment signal. The controller is connected to the receiver and the component, and determines if a curtailment signal has been received by the receiver. If the curtailment signal was received, the controller determines whether the component should be operated in the resource savings mode, and if so, the controller operates the component in the resource savings mode, and if not, the controller operates the component operated in the normal operation mode.
