Multi-user system for creating and maintaining a medical-decision-making knowledge base

A multi-user system for creating and maintaining a knowledge base is implemented on a variety of computer systems, including single-user personal computers, networked personal computers, and data communications networks, including the Internet. The system has a graphic user interface which can be easily learned by non-programmers. The knowledge base is displayed as a hierarchical multiplicity of nodes, in which each node is related to one or more superior nodes. Title of text, rules, references, and attributes associated with each node are displayed, and may be modified. Simulation is used to verify the knowledge base once generated. Data may be extracted from the bases in the form of hard-copy books, databases for downloading into Web browsers, and databases for downloading into hand-held computers including a multiplicity of grids, and a multiplicity of branches in the form of a logic tree. The user may choose one of the alternative display formats, and the hierarchy can be displayed in either collapsed view or expanded view. Interference between two or more users accessing the system concurrently is prevented by a locking and authorization subsystem, which also prevents unauthorized access to the environment. The system provides an organization of workflow into a multiplicity of development stages. Each such stage has associated with it an authorization level, developers working on the system concurrently are limited by these levels to access only particular stages and levels of development.

Interference and noise estimation in an OFDM system

Noise and interference can be independently measured in a multiple user Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. Co-channel interference is measured in a frequency hopping, multiple user, OFDM system by tracking the sub-carriers assigned to all users in a particular service area or cell. The composite noise plus interference can be determined by measuring the amount of received power in a sub-carrier whenever it is not assigned to any user in the cell. A value is stored for each sub-carrier in the system and the value of noise plus interference can be a weighted average of the present value with previously stored values. The noise component can be independently determined in a synchronous system. In the synchronous system, all users in a system may periodically be prohibited from broadcasting over a sub-carrier and the received power in the sub-carrier measured during the period having no broadcasts.

Method and apparatus for recommending selections based on preferences in a multi-user system

A system for determining selections that a user is likely to be interested in. The determination is made based on the user's prior indicated preferences. The user designates his or her preferred selections as entries in a user's preference list. Entries in the user's list are compared with entries in the other users' lists. When a significant number of matches have been found between two lists, the unmatched entries of the other user's preference list are extracted. The unmatched entries are further processed. Those unmatched entries with a high correlation to the user's preference list are presented to the user as selections in which the user is likely to be interested.

Event registration and dispatch system and method for multi-point controls

Dynamic registration of event handlers in a computer application or operating system recognizes multiple synchronous input streams by identifying each new stroke in a frame representing a single moment in time and mapping in a registration process each identified new stroke to a listening process that is associated with the user interface element to which the new input stream is to be applied. In the same frame, released strokes are unmapped and then each active listening process is called to carry out a respective control operation. When called, the strokes have the correct data for the given frame. The process is repeated for subsequent frames. By carrying out various processes in a sequence of frames, the concept of concurrency is preserved, which is particularly beneficial to multi-touch and multi-user systems.
