Spoken language interface

A spoken language interface comprises an automatic speech recognition system and a text to speech system controlled by a voice controller. The ASR and TTS are connected to a telephony system which receives user speech via a communications link. A dialogue manager is connected to the voice controller and provides control of dialogue generated in response to user speech. The dialogue manager is connected to application managers each of which provide an interface to an application with which the user can converse. Dialogue and grammars are stored in a database as data and are retrieved under the control of the dialogue manager and a personalisation and adaptive learning module. A session and notification manager records session details and enables re-connection of a broken conversation at the point at which the conversation was broken.

System and method for identifying tissue using low-coherence interferometry

An apparatus for needle biopsy with real time tissue differentiation using one dimensional interferometric ranging imaging, comprising a biopsy device having a barrel and a needle, an optical fiber inserted in the needle, and a fiber optic imaging system connected to the optical fiber. The imaging system obtains images and compares the optical properties and patterns to a database of normalized tissue sample images to determine different tissue types. The physician performing the biopsy obtains feedback via a feedback unit associated with the biopsy device and which is connected to the imaging system. The feedback unit can provide visual, audible or vibratory feedback as to tissue type encountered when the needle is inserted toward the target tissue. The feedback unit can be programmed for different biopsy procedures so that the user can actuate a button to select a display or other feedback mechanism for the desired procedure and anticipated tissue to be encountered.

System and method for determination of position

A system and method of determining and reporting on the position of a wireless device relative to a group of other wireless devices dispersed within a specified geographic area. The system includes at least one Query Unit, three or more Responding Units disposed at determinable locations within the specified geographic area, and one or more Mobile Units, which may correspond to additional Responding Units or units that function only as receivers. The Query Unit sequentially queries the Responding Units, and, responsive to the respective query messages, the Responding Units transmit corresponding response messages. One or more of the Mobile Units receive the query and response messages, and generate, for each query-response message pair, a set of time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) measurements, which are used by the Mobile Units to determine their positions relative to the Responding Units. The Mobile Units record the times-of-arrival (TOAs) of the query message and the response messages at their respective receivers, and calculate the TDOAs based on the recorded TOAs. The TDOAs are then analyzed to determine the time differences due to the differences in lengths of the respective message propagation paths. The position of each Mobile Unit can then be computed using computation techniques typically employed in Long Range Navigation (LORAN) receivers, or any other suitable computation technique.

System for and method of transferring charge to convert capacitance to voltage for touchscreen controllers

A touchscreen controller system determines the actual locations of multiple simultaneous touches by eliminating mutual capacitance between adjacent rows and columns during self-capacitance measurements and selectively enabling mutual capacitance during mutual capacitance measurements. During the self-capacitance measurements, the controller system generates a set of candidate touch locations, which includes the locations of real and ghost touches. During the mutual capacitance measurements, only the locations in the candidate set are measured and, from these measurements, the actual touch locations are determined. By limiting the mutual capacitive measurements to only a small subset of the locations over the entire touch panel, real touch locations are determined on a linear order. Also, by using on-chip integration capacitors, embodiments of the invention are able to perform each measurement in a single cycle.

System and method for deadlock-free pipelining

A system and method for facilitating increased graphics processing without deadlock. Embodiments of the present invention provide storage for execution unit pipeline results (e.g., texture pipeline results). The storage allows increased processing of multiple threads as a texture unit may be used to store information while corresponding locations of the register file are available for reallocation to other threads. Embodiments further provide for preventing deadlock by limiting the number of requests and ensuring that a set of requests is not issued unless there are resources available to complete each request of the set of requests. Embodiments of the present invention thus provide for deadlock free increased performance.

Progressive watermark decoding on a distributed computing platform

The disclosure describes a method of progressively decoding a digital watermark on a distributed computing platform. A client device equipped with a digital camera, such as a PDA or cell phone, captures a digital image of a watermarked object, and pre-filters the image to isolate a portion of the image data suspected of containing a digital watermark. The pre-filter de-correlates a portion of the image data suspected of containing a digital watermark from the remaining host image signal using a predictive filter. The client then quantizes the filtered data and progressively transmits the quantized data to a watermark decoder. The progressive transmitter sends image data as necessary to achieve a valid decoding operation. To reduce bandwidth requirements, the transmitter starts with the most highly quantized version of the filtered image, and sends lesser quantized versions until the watermark decoder completes a successful decoding operation.

Mmpp analysis of network traffic using a transition window

Data communication in network traffic is modeled in real time and is analyzed using a 2-state Markov modified Poissen process (MMPP). The traffic inter-arrival times for bursty and idle states define a transition window [λ1max, λ2min] represented by the boundary values λ1max max for the inter-arrival time for bursty traffic, and λ2min for the inter-arrival time for idle traffic. Changes in the values of λ1max and λ2min are tracked over time, and the size of the transition window is enlarged or decreased based upon relative changes in these values. If the inter-rival times for the bursty state and the idle state become approximately equal, the model defaults to a single state model. The modeling is applicable to the synchronization of polling and blocking in a low-latency network system. This permits the adoptive selection of poll or block to maximize CPU utilization and interrupt latency.

Method for shot peening and a machine therefor (as amended)

A method for shot peening wherein the work is processed by being hit by shot materials that are shot by compressed air, and a machine for carrying out the method are provided. By the present invention the status of a work can be measured while the work is being processed. The requirements for maintaining and calibrating the sensor that is used for the measurement are reduced because the wear of the sensor is prevented. The method for shot peening is to process a work by shooting the shot materials with compressed air from a shooting nozzle against the work. The shooting nozzle is equipped with a transducer that detects elastic waves and transduces them to high-frequency electrical signals. The elastic waves are generated when the shot materials pass through the shooting nozzle. The characteristic values of the shot materials, which pass through the shooting nozzle, are measured and monitored based on the signals.
