A downhole crystal-based clock that is substantially insensitive to the factors that may cause frequency deviation as a result of downhole temperature. The clock may include a plurality of crystals, where a first crystal may be more stable, with respect to temperature, than a second crystal. The crystals may be thermally coupled together so that they may have substantially the same temperature. An error detector may monitor the differences between the frequencies associated with each crystal and provide this information to a storage device. This information may be determined prior to deploying the clock downhole. When deployed downhole, the signal from the error detector may be interpreted in light of the information in the storage device to provide a temperature measurement of the two crystals. The downhole temperature measurement then may be used to reduce frequency deviations in the downhole clock that may result from downhole temperatures.

While the quench signal (264) is in logic state HIGH, a quenched oscillator is being turned ON and the oscillation amplitude builds-up until a steady-state level is reached. When the oscillator is turned OFF, effective quality factor of an electronically tunable resonator (206) is reduced, by increasing losses in the circuit, thus to ensure aperiodic (non-oscillatory) decay. The resonator's charge—an energy stored on internal reactive components of the resonator (206), which existed at the instant of turning the oscillations OFF, is transferred during precisely defined period of time to the charge holding capacitor (404) of a charge transfer circuit (216). Charge is stored on the charge holding capacitor (404), which is also part of a loop filter, until the described here charge transfer cycle is repeated again. A frequency control signal (268) at the output of the loop filter sets the frequency of the oscillation for the duration of the succeeding oscillator ON time.

A compact atomic oscillator with improved frequency stability. A voltage-controlled oscillator generates an oscillation signal based on a given control voltage, and a modulator modulates it with a low-frequency signal. A phase-locked loop (PLL) upconverts the modulated oscillation signal directly to a first frequency in atomic resonance frequency band. The first frequency is an integer multiple of the oscillation signal. A frequency synthesizer produces a second frequency specified by a frequency setting unit, and a mixer combines the first and second frequencies to produce an RF signal for driving an atomic resonator. The amount of discharge lamp light passing through the atomic resonator depends on the difference between RF signal frequency and atomic resonance frequency. This quantity is measured as a resonance detection signal, and a frequency controller applies it to synchronous detection to produce a control voltage for the voltage-control oscillator.
