ActiveUS20100219757A1Eliminating and minimizing riskBig spaceElectric discharge tubesElectric arc lampsReactive gasPlasma ignition
Described are methods and apparatuses, including computer program products, for igniting and / or sustaining a plasma in a reactive gas generator. Power is provided from an ignition power supply to a plasma ignition circuit. A pre-ignition signal of the plasma ignition circuit is measured. The power provided to the plasma ignition circuit is adjusted based on the measured pre-ignition signal and an adjustable pre-ignition control signal. The adjustable pre-ignition control signal is adjusted after a period of time has elapsed.

Mixing arrangement for atomizing nozzle in multi-phase flow

The invention relates to an improved mixing arrangement for, primarily, moving bitumen in steam from sources of such bitumen and steam to a reactor or coker for further processing of the bitumen into petroleum products. The invention provides a main conduit connected to an atomizing nozzle mounted in a wall of the reactor and first and second conduits for flowing bitumen and steam respectively into the main conduit. The first conduit is angled relative to the main conduit at an acute angle of about 45° and the second conduit is angled relative to the main conduit at an acute angle of about 30°. The second conduit is positioned downstream of the first conduit by a short distance of about 23 mm and may be angled radially relative to the first conduit by any angle, although a 90° angle is preferred. A flow accelerating nozzle is located in the second conduit adjacent the entrance therefrom into the main conduit. The arrangement of the invention improves the flow characteristics of 2-phase material flowing to the atomizing nozzle, reducing pulsations in the main conduit and improving the resulting atomization of the bitumen in the reactor.

Closable loop access guide catheter

The Access guide catheter provides passage for therapeutic and diagnostic devices through vessels or conduits that return substantially in a direction from which they originated. One application is for delivery of therapeutic catheters to the carotid or cerebral arteries via access from the radial or brachial artery. The guide catheter enters the aorta from one of the great vessels, forms a closed loop in the aorta, and is directed back into a great vessel in an opposed direction. The distal portion of the guide catheter is advanced into the great vessel for support. Further support is attained by providing tension to the proximal shaft of the guide catheter. Flexibility of the guide catheter allows diagnostic angiograms to be performed prior to delivery of a therapeutic catheter or device.

Compressor control system for vehicle air conditioner

In a compressor control system for a vehicle air conditioner, a hybrid ECU of the vehicle controls a rotation speed of a compressor electric motor. In this case, an output circuit, which outputs a driving signal for driving the compressor electric motor, only needs to be newly provided in the hybrid ECU when a hybrid vehicle or an electric vehicle is manufactured based on an engine vehicle. Therefore, a high cost is not caused even when the output circuit is provided in the hybrid ECU which should be newly designed and manufactured. In addition, because the output circuit does not need to be provided in an air-conditioning ECU which is an existing component of the engine vehicle, the air-conditioning ECU in the engine vehicle can be directly applied to that in the hybrid vehicle without a substantial hardware change. Therefore, design cost can be reduced.

LED driver circuit with over-current protection during a short circuit condition

An LED driver circuit is provided for protecting one (or more) LEDs connected in series from over-current damages which may result from a short circuit condition. The driver circuit includes a current control circuit for receiving an input signal from a power source and providing a current output for powering the LED. A voltage sensor detects a voltage across the LED. An LED current restriction circuit such as a switching element restricts a current flow into the LED. A short circuit response circuit controls the LED current restriction circuit dependent on a comparison between the voltage detected by the voltage sensor and a predetermined threshold value. When the detected voltage is less than or equal to the threshold value, the response circuit determines a short circuit, and a signal is sent to the current restriction circuit to restrict current flow into the one or more LEDs.

Acceleration sensor

An acceleration sensor includes first and second fixed electrodes on a substrate, and a movable electrode located above the first and second fixed electrodes, with respect to the substrate, and facing them. The movable electrode is elastically supported on the substrate by a first elastic supporting body and is movable. A mass, which is elastically supported on the substrate by a second elastic supporting body, moves in response to an acceleration in a direction perpendicular to the substrate. A linking portion links the movable electrode and the mass at a position spaced from an axis of movement of the movable electrode by a distance. Acceleration is measured based on changes in a first capacitance between the first fixed electrode and the movable electrode and a second capacitance between the second fixed electrode and the movable electrode. Thus, a highly impact resistant and highly reliable acceleration sensor is obtained.

H.264/AVC frame inner prediction method based on edge characteristics

The invention discloses an H.264 / AVC intra-prediction method based on edge characteristics, which includes: performing data block prejudging before intra-prediction based on principal edge intensity (DES) and the like edge direction characteristics calculated by the edge histogram description describing the image marginal distribution, selecting the mode subclass corresponding to the characteristics to perform RDO calculation, thereby reducing the mode selection number of the intra-prediction; at the same time directly determining the Intra_8*8 chrominance prediction mode from the Intra_16*16 brightness prediction mode according to the correlativity of the chrominance prediction mode and the brightness prediction mode, to further reduce the complexity of the algorithm. The method has six steps, and is convenient and facilitating. Practice shows that the method can obviously improve the encoding speed, and can ensure that the bit-rate encoding (an increase of 3%) and peak signal-noise ratio (reduced about 0.02dB) have little change compared with the full search method. The method has very good practical value and application prospects.

A vision metric, called the sharpness metric, indicates the subjective sharpness of a patient's vision by taking into account both the wavefront aberration and the retinal response to the image. A retinal image quality function such as the point spread function is convolved by a neural quality function, and the maximum of the convolution over the retinal plane provides the sharpness metric. The sharpness metric can be used to control eye surgery or the fabrication of a lens.
