Automated system for storing, retrieving and managing sample

An automated storage system for storing large quantities of samples in trays includes a storage compartment, a tray shuttle compartment abutting the storage compartment on one side and a plurality of independent modules on the other side. The modules perform processing of samples that are retrieved from the storage compartment by a tray shuttle, including extraction of selected samples from retrieved source trays and transfer of the selected samples into a separate, destination tray that can be further processed or removed from the system for use. The independent operation of the modules permits handling and processing to be performed simultaneously by different modules while the tray shuttle accesses additional samples within the storage compartment. In one embodiment, a vertical carousel is used to vertically align a desired tray with the tray shuttle, while the tray shuttle operates within a horizontal plane.

Deformable intraocular corrective lens

A deformable, artificial intraocular contact lens for implantation into the human eye to correct normal-vision problems. The lens may be positioned posteriorly from the iris, resting against the anterior surface of the posterior capsule's natural lens. Alternatively, the lens may be positioned in the anterior chamber of the eye. The implanted lens works in conjunction with the cornea and natural lens to provide proper vision, as a substitute for regular contact lens, spectacles, and radial keratotomy. The lens may be designed from a rigid or semi-rigid material. Due to the thinness of the structure, the lens may be rolled and inserted into the eye, minimizing both the length of the corneal incision and the stretching of the cornea.

System for controlling a magnetically levitated rotor

In a rotor assembly having a rotor supported for rotation by magnetic bearings, a processor controlled by software or firmware controls the generation of force vectors that position the rotor relative to its bearings in a “bounce” mode in which the rotor axis is displaced from the principal axis defined between the bearings and a “tilt” mode in which the rotor axis is tilted or inclined relative to the principal axis. Waveform driven perturbations are introduced to generate force vectors that excite the rotor in either the “bounce” or “tilt” modes.

Multi-configurable tractor

A tractor includes a motor, transmission, drive shaft and rear differential for driving the rear axles mounted on a main tubular frame of a variable configuration. Forwardly extendable telescoping tubular frame members are actuated by respective rams to selectively increase the wheel base between the front and rear wheels. The front and rear telescoping tubes supporting each of the wheels are selectively extendable to significantly increase the wheel width of the tractor; the axles for the rear wheels are commensurately extendable. A toolbar dependingly supported from the main frame in front of the cab permits the operator to view the operation of attached implements while driving. The toolbar may include a row guide causing the toolbar to move laterally as necessary to follow a row and the toolbar is connected to the steering mechanism to control the direction of travel of the tractor. The front wheels are pivotally mounted on the corresponding telescoping tubes to provide sufficient clearance to permit near 180° pivotal movement. The steering mechanism is capable of pivoting each front wheel through an angle of about 180° and establishes an appropriate geometric relationship between the front wheels to permit the tractor to turn about any center of rotation intersected by the common axis of rotation of the rear axle, including pivoting about either rear wheel, while maintaining the axis of rotation of each front wheel in intercepting relationship with the center of rotation. Moreover, the turn radius at the end of a row is minimal and can be further reduced by temporarily reducing the length of the frame. Various implements, including a toolbar, can be readily attached directly to the tubular frame at any location intermediate the front and rear axles, as necessary.
